More than five hundred years ago, clans of dwarves and gnomes made an agreement known as the Phandelver’s Pact, by which they would share a rich mine in a wondrous cavern known as Wave Echo Cave. In addition to its mineral wealth, the mine contained great magical power. Human spellcasters allied themselves with the dwarves and gnomes to channel and bind that energy into a great forge (called the Forge of Spells), where magic items could be crafted. Times were good, and the nearby human town of Phandalin (pronounced fan-duh-lin) prospered as well. But then disaster struck when orcs swept through the North and laid waste to all in their path.
A powerful force of orcs reinforced by evil mercenary wizards attacked Wave Echo Cave to seize its riches and magic treasures. Human wizards fought alongside their dwarf and gnome allies to defend the Forge of Spells, and the ensuing spell battle destroyed much of the cavern. Few survived the cave-ins and tremors, and the location of Wave Echo Cave was lost.
For centuries, rumors of buried riches have attracted treasure seekers and opportunists to the area around Phandalin, but no one has ever succeeded in locating the lost mine. In recent years, people have resettled the area. Phandalin is now a rough-and-tumble frontier town. More important, the Rockseeker brothers — a trio of dwarves — have discovered the entrance to Wave Echo Cave, and they intend to reopen the mines.
Unfortunately for the Rockseekers, they are not the only ones interested in Wave Echo Cave. A mysterious villain known as the Black Spider controls a network of bandit gangs and goblin tribes in the area, and his agents have followed the Rockseekers to their prize. Now the Black Spider wants Wave Echo Cave for himself, and he is taking steps to make sure no one else knows where it is.
Welcome, adventurers, to the Lost Mines of Phandelver! Considering that I've gotten a hang of character playing in Play-by-Post, I figured I'd try my hand at DMing.
Player Experience: Doesn't matter. New players are welcome, and we'll learn together! Expert players are welcome, and allowed to help out the new players.
Post Frequency: I will expect party members to post at least once per day. If you can't post for a day or two, feel free to reach out and I will understand.
IC will be in the DDB forums and OOC will be in PMs.
I will be looking for 4-6 characters. Starting level is Level 1. The adventure should take the characters up to Level 5. Restricting to PHB options for sake of simplicity. I will be using milestone advancement for leveling. Choose starting equipment or gold, I don't care. For ability scores, roll 4d6 and drop lowest, rerolling ones once. If total ability scores are below 70, use point buy.
Character form should be filled out as such:
Name: Race: Class: Background: Alignment: (no evil alignments please) Backstory: Doesn't have to be too long. 5-7 sentences should suffice. Just let me know who your character is and what drives them to adventure.
Adventure Hook: In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you to bring a wagon load of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days' travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found "something big," and that he'd pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen's Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Haliwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to "take care of business."
You've spent the last few days following the High Road south from Neverwinter, and you've just recently veered east along the Triboar Trail. You've encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.
(In your backstory, explain in a few sentences how you know Gundren.)
A link to a character sheet would be nice, but not required until your character is accepted.
I will leave this recruitment thread open for about 5-7 days depending on the popularity, and I will notify those who are selected via PM.
PM me if you have any questions. Good luck adventurers!
Backstory: Pierce was born to an elven mother, and grew up ostracized by her people for the way he looked. As he grew older, he spent more and more time in the wilds, preferring the beasts to the people. It all came to a head when his mother remarried, since his stepfather couldn’t stand him, so Pierce decided it was time to go before something bad happened that couldn’t be undone. He left with some basic supplies and traveled until he passed from the elven lands into more varied landscapes, intent on proving himself a better person than his family saw. He fought off encounters with beasts and goblins, the occasional bandits, and even helped a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker, who turned out to need a little more help in a week or two. Needing a bit of money, and eager to help, Pierce accepted, and traveled to transport Gundren’s goods to where he needed them.
Name: Sylmenor Siannodel Race: High Elf Class: Rogue Background: Sage Alignment: C/G Backstory: Sylmenor has studied the lore of the creation of magic items for decades and taught what he knew to students at the university of Neverwinter. He had developed a little of a reputation for it, and one day Gundren Rockseeker came asking a few questions about some old forge. Answering his questions as best he was able and doing a little additional research to find some answers. One day Gundren returned and invited him along on an expedition, one right up his alley. Intrigued, Sylmenor dusted off some old armor and weapons from his training as a youth and set off.
Name: Rhogar Race: Black Dragonborn (Teenager) Class: Fighter Background: Outlander Alignment: Chaotic Neutral Backstory: Rhogar and his tribe were living peacefully for years, not having many qualms with other creatures. One day, while Rhogar and his family were having a meal, their village was surprised by a raid of Orcs and Ogres. These beasts destroyed the village and everyone in the village (As far as Rhogar knows). Rhogar's mother and father sacrificed themselves to allow Rhogar to escape, some of the other young Dragonborn were not so lucky. Rhogar spent the next couple years living alone in the forest, learning what he can about fighting and honing what he had already learned from his parents already. He eventually found his way to Neverwinter, and in need of coin, looked around for easy tasks to do. This is where he finds Gundren, who, after earning his trust with some other minor tasks, allowed Rhogar to go on this venture.
Name: Lorahzt Race: Dark Elf Class: Fighter (Battle Master) Background: Criminal/Spy Alignment: True Neutral Backstory: "Keep out of the mistress's way," was among the first lessons that Lorahzt would take to heart. Growing up with only slightly more status than a slave did wonders to temper the young drow woman's opinions of the society she belonged to, and turned her ambitions firmly away from it. At first, she tried to stay below notice by simply doing her menial labor and saying nothing, but her silence was mistaken for scheming and she was nearly executed by her foreman. Then she hatched a plan to get "punished" into working as a guard on the outskirts of her underground settlement, but then it turned out that small guard outposts and lonely tunnel watches made for perfect assassination opportunities for rookies looking to climb the ranks. Finally, with several new scars and a growing fear of her own kind, Lorahzt threw caution to the wind and made a break for somewhere that wasn't home. After several perilous weeks, getting lost, nearly getting eaten twice, and avoiding any and all contact with anything that she couldn't hunt and eat, Lorahzt finally made it to the surface... and quickly came to despise the sun. Still, it didn't take her long to see the value in staying once she arrived, for as strange as the people were (and as infuriating as the sunlight was), they were all far better company than down below... Masquerading as a moon elf with sensitive eyes, she was able to meet and briefly work with one Gundren Rockseeker, a dwarf who rather quickly saw through her... limited disguise. In spite of her fears, Gundren kept her secret, and in return Lorahzt did her job, did it quietly, and did it well. It was to her surprise when he offered her a new job escorting a shipment to Phandalin, but she did need the money, and she did know she could trust him...
Name: Bradamante Race: Half-Orc Class: Cleric (Life Domain) Background: Acolyte Alignment: Lawful Neutral Backstory: Bradamante was raised in the city of Neverwinter by her pious human father who encouraged her to follow in his footsteps and become a priestess of Helm, rather than become a mercenary like her mother. Bradamante joined the clergy, but was never fully satisfied with tending to a temple, and could not help seeking out little adventures in the city. On one of these adventures, Bradamante was able to help a dwarf called Gundren Rockseeker out. Gundren later remembered his half-orc helper and contacted her with an offer of work. Eager to adventure, Bradamante gladly accepted the offer.
Just to let you know, I have DMed the Lost Mine of Phandelver before. I hope it is not a problem, but I would understand if you did not want me to play for that reason.

Name: Rubin Fraxinorim Race: Lightfoot Halfling Class: Bard (nor certain yet about College) Background: Entertainer Alignment: NG Backstory: Hospitality and entertaining runs in Rube's blood - he was constantly at his father's side in the family pub and brewery. Wanderers from far and wide were welcomed at the Golden Oak, and many a night the locals were regaled with chilling tales of hideous beasts slain, accounts of pompous rulers mocked, or fables of heart-twined lovers separated by jealous witches. On other nights the common room of the tavern rocked with the songs of and sounds of both exotic and familiar lands, shook with boisterous dancing, or filled with the oohs, aahs, and haha!s at the antics of acrobatic minstrels. Rube yearned to be like those visitors, and, showing little desire or aptitude for the brewing arts or business management, his parents gave their blessing for him to follow his heart - as long as he came back to visit when he could. He befriended a troupe of musicians on their way to Waterdeep, and learned what he could about life on the road. In Waterdeep he found steady work as a performer, and, through his membership with the Musicians' Guild, as a music teacher to some of the city's more affluent families.
After a year of life in the city, Rubin's wanderlust set in, and he ventured north to Neverwinter, where there was less competition (and, he hoped, more demand) for his talents. He was in town for less than a week, earning his keep at an inn by performing for the locals, when a mischievous looking dwarf approached him. After a few rounds of ale, an arrangement was struck: Rubin would escort a group delivering supplies to Phandalin; maybe this would be the adventure that would inspire him to write his own songs!
Name: Cade Briar Race: Ghostwise Halfling Class: Druid (moon) Background: Outlander Alignment: (no evil alignments please) CG Backstory: Doesn't have to be too long. 5-7 sentences should suffice. Just let me know who your character is and what drives them to adventure.
Cade grew up in the Nunwood region of Chondalwood. He has a piece of wood from a tree near the center of the Nunwood, which he carries with him always, a cord around his neck going through a hole carved through the branch. He lived there iwth his halfling kin for his younger ife, but, unlike most of his people, he desired to see the land outside of his woodland home. He would be considered rather outgoing to his people, but quite shy by the standards of those outside of his clan.
He often traveled to the tree where the Emerald Enclave had a warden for the forest, put there to make sure the lunbermen from Hlath and Reth did not harm the forest with their work. The current warden was a wood elf maid, who was more than happy to talk to Cade about the world outside of the Chondalwood. Due to needing to keep an eye on the lunbermen, the warden's tree was located nearer the edge fo the forest, so Cade had many chances to watch the men as they cut down threes and planted new.
One day Cade decided he wished to see this land outside of his homeland for himself. With some advice from the Emerald Enclave's Warden, he traveled to Hlath, since it was a port city. He spent a few months in Hlath, seeing the sights and getting to know the city. He knew he wished to see other places, the City of Wonders called Waterdeep, was high on his list. He did odd jobs around the city, learning quickly that money was required in the land outside of the Chondalwood. He eventually booked passage, and started his great adventure.
On his way to Waterdeep, he ended up in Neverwinter. Low on coin, he was more than willing to sign on to a short-term job when a dwarf by the name of Gundren Rockseeker approached him in a local tavern, offering a bit of work.
Will go with the starting equipment instead of gold.
Name: Thror Firebeard Race: Mountain Dwarf Class: Wild Magic Sorceror Background: Guild Artisan Alignment: True Neutral Backstory: So how are you enjoying that mug of ale? It's quite a beauty ain't it? Smooth and creamy. Want something stronger? Try the Undermountain Dark Ale. You like that don't you? Good man. You know how to appreciate good ale. Who am I? You mean you don't know who I am? Me? Who I am? Why you must me joking! I am Thror Firebeard! The best brewer in Mithril Hall and some say in all of the dalelands.
Excuse me my good sir, but I do not jest. Yes I know my beard is not red. I get the black from me mother's side. That drink you hold in your hand is a product of my expert touch. Sure the original recipe has been in the hands of my clan for ages but they were not the gems they are today! It was I who made the adjustments which made our ales what they are today. Who would have thought that by roasting the wheat with.... Heh. That was a close call wasn't it? Almost blurted out something I shouldn't have, and in the middle of a busy tavern to boot!
Well as I was saying, me clan have been in service of the Battlehammers since before it was lost. Me father's father's father's father's father's father's father first brewed ale for King Gandalug and the Firebeard's have been supplying ale to the rightful kings of Mithril Hall ever since. Even today, me brother makes sure King Connerad Brawnanvil's supply of Firebeard Ale is well stocked.
Why am I out here you ask? Well, someone has to make sure that our ales reach appreciative hands such as yours. Need to make sure existing deals are maintained and new ones signed you know, especially with all the trouble that has been about lately. There is also a little matter of this friend of mine Gundren Rockseeker, perhaps you've heard of him? No? Well I wouldn't have expected you too since you haven't heard of me and I am much more well known than that stubborn dwarf. I supposed I owe my life to his meddling ways. Saved me from a group of hoodlums who were after the recipe for our special brews. Rivals. Very cut throat this business.
Anyways I must be off, it seems that Gundren has gotten himself in a spot of trouble and needs my help. A Firebeard always repays his debt, and I, Thror Firebeard shall be no different.
Just to let you know, I have DMed the Lost Mine of Phandelver before. I hope it is not a problem, but I would understand if you did not want me to play for that reason.
No worries. I don’t mind as long as you don’t metagame.
Name: Tarhun Race: Blue Dragonborn Class: Barbarian (Path TBD) Background: Criminal Alignment: Chaotic Neutral Backstory: Born to a proud clan of Dragonborn warriors, Tarhun was renowned for his ferocity in battle. Unfortunately, his appetites often got the best of him, and after one particularly memorable week in the city of Waterdeep, he found himself with a massive debt to one of the city's criminal syndicates. Deeply embarrassed by Tarhun's behavior his clan abandoned him, and Tarhun was forced to work as an enforcer for the syndicate to pay off his debt. To the deeply proud Blue Dragonborn, this work as a debt collector further fueled the rage burning inside him. Once the debt was paid, Tarhun vowed to never return to Waterdeep. Traveling to Neverwinter, Tarhun found himself in another tavern. This time, however, he found himself in conversation with an entreprenurial dwarf by the name of Gundren Rockseeker, who had honest work for him. Hopeful that this may be the first step in regaining his honor, Tarhun accepts the dwarf's offer and prepares his greatsword for another job.
Name: Ologu Race: Half-Orc Class: Paladin Background: Noble (recovering) Alignment: Lawful Neutral Backstory: Ologu’s aristocratic family has been losing stature for several generations due to poor alliances and missed business opportunities. When rumor arrived that the Rockseekers may have discovered the entrance to the Wave Echo Cave, Ologu’s parents, through connections and bribes, secured Ologu a position with Gundren to deliver the supplies. Being that Ologu was the sixth male heir to the family title, he was considered ... expendable. After all, thIs rumor was 5th to 6th hand and this “opportunity” might come to nothing. But if it were true, an alliance with the Rockseekers could secure the family for generations.

Ability scores: 151314141012 Name: Thadalas Willowlake Race: Wood Elf Class: Rogue (Scout) Background: Folk Hero Alignment: Chaotic Good Backstory: Thadalas Willowlake is a Wood Elf born among an elvish tribe that resides in Ardeep Forest. The chieftain of the tribe is Rond Arrowhome. The forest is a few miles east of Waterdeep, on the south bank of the River Dessarin. Three clearings in the northwest corner closest to Waterdeep are favorite rendezvous spots for clandestine lovers and runaways. The interior of Ardeep Forest contains many ridges and steep gullies that are hidden beneath thick vines, dense shrubbery, and cloaking mists that present a danger to casual travelers. In addition, tunnels, cellars, and vaults constructed by dwarves during a time of alliance became pitfalls centuries later.
About a decade before the War of the Silver Marches, the inhabitants of the neighboring village of Nightstone, led by Lord Drezlin Nandar from Waterdeep, started making hunting expeditions into the forest in an attempt to reestablish the hunting lodge held there by House Nandar two centuries earlier. These incursions infuriated the few remaining elves. In the following years, the conflict escalated until the elves assaulted Nightstone and killed Drezlin. In the aftermath, his widow, Velrosa Nandar, made peace with the elves and pledged never to make any such expeditions into the forest again. She kept that promise until her death one year later when the cloud giants attacked Nightstone.
These events sparked an alliance between goblins and orcs that were residing in Ardeep Forest. The orc tribe are known as Ear Seekers. They gained this name from cutting off the ears of their enemies for trophies. Rond and the wood elves protect Ardeep Forest to the best of their ability, preserving the ruins and wildlife that remain. The wood elves had many hunters and gatherers, and they also had scouts and spies that would keep a watchful eye on foreign threats. Thadalas wasn’t a hunter or a gatherer; instead, he was a scout. His job was to search for orcish or goblin territory and report back to Rond so they can lead an assault.
Thadalas was captured by the Ear Seekers, and was doomed to be slain and eaten. Before that could happen, Thadalas had his right ear chopped off as a trophy. As he was waiting to be killed, a group of adventurers had invaded the orcish camp and saved Thadalas from his fate. The adventurers were on a mission to rescue the town of Nightstone and were searching for its missing citizens. Thadalas, in his gratitude, offered to assist the adventurers and in doing so, found the citizens in a goblin cave and rescued them all accordingly.
Thadalas returned to his family among the wood elves of Ardeep Forest, and had informed them of what had transpired. Rond led a charge of warriors to Nightstone to help the humans reclaim their town from the attacking orcs and goblins. Thadalas had joined this charge, and felt a rush of overwhelming joy from this magnanimous act. Rond could’ve left this alone but instead felt that the courteous act of rescuing Thadalas from being slaughtered warranted their aid. Inevitably, the goblins and orcs were defeated and Nightstone was reclaimed.
Thadalas had a revelation this day. He was inspired by these heroes to change his outlook of life. He’s spent his entire life within Ardeep Forest contending these foul creatures from tarnishing the ruins and wildlife that he never had a chance to venture out to see the rest of the world. When the wood elves returned to their forest, Thadalas made a vow that he wanted to leave the forest and become an adventurer, like the heroes that saved him. Rond and the rest of his family were understanding of this and wished him the best in his endeavors and is now leaving to explore. No destination in sight, just wanting to enjoy the journey, make some new friends, and find new stories to tell. Character Sheet Link: https://ddb.ac/characters/34963691/uQbWDv
Hi @Yoshiguy52! I’ve been waiting for a Lost Mines game to come up! I’ve never played it. I love a good role play session! Feel free to check out my recent posts to see if our play-styles would gel! I hope so. I can easily post multiple times a day. Here’s my character idea:-
Background: Hermit Alignment: Neutral good Backstory: Lia is young for an elf, having not yet passed her first century. In a few years though, it will be her coming-of-age, and The Trials. For the last decade she’s been preparing, meditating, and training. During this time she’s wandered far from her forest home. While in the mountains she was rescued by Gundren Rockseeker from an owlbear attack. To this day, she owes him her life. Gundren often calls on her, if he has work that needs her particular skills.
((I’m happy to tweak anything here to fit the world. And love developing deeper backstory as the game unfolds and in reaction to other party members)).

Name:Arame' Race:V. Human Class:Wizard Background:Sage Alignment: Lawful Good Backstory:Arame met Gundren in a tavern 5 years ago when she was only 23. She had just traveled in to Neverwinter with several other people who were going the same way. When she had been studying her craft, she had heard that Neverwinter was short of wizards these days. After arriving, she stopped at a tavern, exhausted, only wanting a meal and then to rest. There was a table full of drunk and rowdy men near Gundren's table. When the local bard began his repertoire of merry tunes, Gundren happened to notice that the drunk men wouldn't leave Arame alone. She had politely said no to their requests for a 'dance with the wee lass' and when they began to bodily lift her to the floor, passing her back and forth between them, Gundren and his brother's stood up to the drunken men. Though they were outnumbered 5 to 3, Gundren and his brothers who were not drunk prevailed. Arame and Gundren have been friends since then.
Life gives you lemons, make lemonade, life gives you a sword? You make corpses of your enemies, sorcery is a good sword life has given you. (Stolen from friend)
Name: Desdemona Hillcrest Race: Tiefling Class: Wizard Background: Sage Alignment: Neutral Good Backstory: Desdemona was the daughter of a seamstress, and first starting learning magic from the libraries of her mother's clients. The daughter of one of those clients, the Torgasts, helped her earn a place at the Academy to study magic after her mother's death. She is adventuring in hopes of making a name for herself, as well as to maybe catch the attention of a certain childhood friend (who she has been in love with for years) Violet Torgast. Desdemona has just graduated from the Academy and was recommended to Gundren by her advisor.

Name: Cade Briar
Race: Ghostwise Halfling
Class: Druid (moon)
Background: Outlander
Alignment: (no evil alignments please) CG
Backstory: Doesn't have to be too long.

Name: Thror Firebeard
Race: Mountain Dwarf
Class: Wild Magic Sorceror
Background: Guild Artisan
Alignment: True Neutral
Backstory: So how are you enjoying that mug of ale?

Backstory: Born to a proud clan of Dragonborn warriors, Tarhun was renowned for his ferocity in battle. Name: Thadalas Willowlake
Race: Wood Elf
Class: Rogue (Scout)
Background: Folk Hero
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Backstory: Thadalas Willowlake is a Wood Elf born among an elvish tribe that resides in Ardeep Forest.

Name:Arame'
Race:V. Human
Class:Wizard
Background:Sage
Alignment: Lawful Good
Backstory:Arame met Gundren in a tavern 5 years ago when she was only 23.
