I'm probably going to take Ranger to lvl5, then switch to fighter
UA feats are off the table
Options at the moment I'm considering are:
1) Sharp Shooter -great looking feat, but do I need the dex bump first to help with the to hit penalty & improve my AC bearing in mind I'm limited to light armour?
2) +1 Dex and +1 Wis, with an idea of picking up resilient Wis later -Or maybe Con instead of Wis? But could delay getting to Dex 20 / sharpshooter?
3) A decent +1 dex feat -I can't find one that's not UA or racial
4) A brilliant alternative plan suggested by the DnD Hive Mind
You're going to want to max your DEX, so there's nothing wrong with just taking +2 to DEX. This lets you punt on feats, and if there's a current UA +1 DEX feat that makes it into Tasha's in a form that works for you (ie, maybe Piercer) you can take it down the road.
Sharpshooter is worth taking at any point, because of the 'ignore cover' feature. Even with +5 to my DEX and the archery fighting style, I tend to only use Sharpshooter's called shot when I have advantage. It really depends on the ACs of whatever you're fighting.
Resilient: WIS will probably do more for you than CON. Yeah, having proficiency in CON saves is helpful, but pay attention to how often you, an aarakocra with a longbow, are actually getting hit (especially if you end up taking sharpshooter first, and can attack from 600 feet with no disadvantage). You don't need to perform a concentration check as often as melee fighters. If you want more HP take Tough. Though I'll also point out, if you're only going to 5 levels of Ranger, there's not a lot you need to up your WIS for. If you're going for the higher initiative, see if Alert helps you more.
How many levels of Fighter do you plan on taking? Because if you're taking 5+ levels of Fighter, are 2nd-level Ranger spells worth duplicating the Extra Attack features you'd get from both classes(they won't stack, you'll still just be attacking twice). With your stats and your subclass choice, I'd be looking to stay with Ranger through 8 levels. At Ranger 4, bump Dex to 18 and Con to 15. At Ranger 7 you get Iron Mind, proficiency in Wisdom saves. At Ranger 8 take Resilient(Con), now your Con is 16 and you have proficiency with all three major save types.
Are you looking to add something specific by multiclassing into Fighter?

The party is lacking in battlefield control (me, life cleric, rouge assassin & drunken monk), so I'm planning on going fighter for battle master. Also there's not a lot in ranger past lvl 5 that grabs me. I know the extra attach from fighter won't stack with the one from ranger, but I didn't want to wait another 5 levels until I picked it up. Also, I have no idea what level we will get to before the campaign ends.
In the end, DM allowed some UA feats, so I went with practised expert to get my DEX bump, and address the fact that I was a ranger without proficiency in survival
Cheers

I'd look to bump dex, this time around.
Then either wisdom, or con depending on what type of fighter route you'll be going down.
Also, switch out your short sword for a rapier. Better damage when you get trapped in melee.
Elven accuracy could work as a feat?
They're not an elf.

Thanks for the help, all. Much appreciated.
