We are currently playing the Tyranny of Dragons campaign. We are still working on the Hoard of the Dragon Queen. Please no spoilers (though I think my DM may be changing some of the adventure for our PC's).
We just hit level 6.
I am playing Thurkear, a Lizardfolk Ranger - Gloomstalker.
For level 6, however, I dipped into Cleric - Nature. This makes a lot of sense storywise (the Lizardfolk God, Semuanya, who rarely acts on this plane, has shown some favor toward my character; my character feels a duty to 'save' other Lizardfolk from the cult of Tiamat). Since, Thurkear is acting directly on behalf of a God, I didn't think Druid would be a good fit.
BUT, this is a mechanics question since I am a newer player. Assuming we actually make it to level 20, would it be best for Thurkear to end with 12 Levels Ranger/8 Levels Cleric. OR, are there good reasons for a different combination?
You should switch to Ranger 5 Cleric 15. Your martial abilities have hit a high for ranger. You have already started the dip into a full caster class. Now, if you go all the way with Cleric 15 you get 8th level spells. You get a better chance for using divine intervention. And at level 14 Cleric you get to add 2d8 to one of your strikes every turn with divine strike. So your weapon attacks will all scale well with ranger, and you’ll have the flexibility to be a powerful caster as well. If you continue with ranger it’s because you like the many skills you can use outside of combat. If that’s more of what you want you could go ranger 5 rogue 6 Cleric 9. Two things of expertise from rogue and uncanny dodge. A bit of sneak attack instead of that extra d8 from divine strike. You lose some spellcasting but you still get 5th level spells so it’s like you never left ranger.

What do other, more experienced players, think?
