Wood Elf Ranger level 9 with 19 Str using a Flame tongue scimitar has a +9 to hit but just a +5 to damage. Can someone explain how we come to these numbers so I can explain it to the owner of said character. How are modifiers figured out? Thanks in advance.
The difference between the bonus for attacks and for damage is the character's proficiency bonus. At level 9, a ranger (or other character) gets a +4 proficiency bonus. This adds to any weapon, tools or skills check with which the character is proficient /trained and stacks with the character's strength bonus and any other bonus from feats or magic. The proficiency bonus does not add to the damage roll.
