Rangers have some great subclasses. They can be huge damage per round machines, mostly from a distance. Which means the fighter, paladin, cleric take the hits, while you shoot at the bad guys from far away. Plus you get spells and stealth. And a remarkably number of your spells are bonus actions.
The spells are great. Hunters Mark is a great example (bonus action) to do more damage. Than there is Healing Spirit a 2nd level bonus action spell that can heal the entire party 1d6 per round.
Rangers are a great combination of ranged damage and skill monkey.
A ranger with the archer fighting style, and maybe later pick up the sharpshooter feat, and you'll be dealing death from 600 feet away! Plus you're stealthy A.F. (especially gloomstalkers!) And you've got a great selection of spells that'll boost your damage output at range. And whenever your party is outdoors (or in wherever your favored terrain is), you're the one who will keep them alive, avoid the traps and pitfalls, gather and hunt for food, and track the enemy through the rain at night and still find your target.
Ranger is awesome! And besides, it's not just what you play, it's HOW you play it that matters. Any class is only as awesome as the player playing it. And you're awesome! So your ranger will be awesome!

Ikram Sahir ibn Malik al-Sayyid Ra'ad, Second Son of the House of Ra'ad, Defender of the Burning Sands. Lvl 9 Brass Dragonborn Sorcerer + Greater Fire Elemental Devil.
Viktor Gavriil. Lvl 20 White Dragonborn Grave Cleric, of Kurgan the God of Death.
Upto lv 5 they are fully on par with anyone else, and afterwards they make a great multiclass - especially if you mix in rogue. You play a ranger to be the dex-based warrior with stealth and some utility spellcasting.
