Take the diseased giant rat. Then have the goblin make a big fuss and love the rat, even though it is disgusting. Or take a wolf that is scared of stuff. A wimp not warrior. Nice that people take beast master, cause I personally love it

'The Cleverness of mushrooms always surprises me!' - Ivern Bramblefoot.
I like Kaoshi's recommendations. Weird and interesting creatures are fun. My only recommendation is since your a small character grab a beast that is a medium size so they can double as your mount.
Stirge. This horrid monster looks like a cross between a large bat and an oversized mosquito. Its legs end in sharp pincers, and its long, needle-like proboscis slashes the air as it seeks to feed on the blood of living creatures.
well there is a very very very special stat block in volo's guide to monsters called the cow, and it has a special variant known as the deep rothe that is medium size and that can cast dancing lights at will, while being medium and able to charge into creatures dealing massive damage. It also communicates by magical flashing lights on its body, an form of communication your ranger might be able to eventiually learn without having to bother with speak with animals.
The giant frog is also an fun choice, any creature it hits with its bite is automatically restrained and grappled meaning that its victims cannot escape you, have disadvantage on its attacks and its strength and dex saves and also everyone has advantage on attacks against them, also it is able to swallow a small creature like a goblin giving you full cover against attacks but you take acid damage every turn. Also it can jump and swim really far, something that is useful out of combat and in combat, just probably the beast beast master companion available to anyone, not just an goblin who is also able to ride the giant frog
the pteranodon is the fastest flier in the known universe, letting you fast really good, use lance with this for good fasts and good hit and run, or you might be tempted to go for an archer with the ultimate archer nest
he fastieth can doge as an bonus action and a really fast overland speed and if equiped with light armor has like AC million with your proficiency bonus and armor and dex combined, completely impossible to hit, and also it deals a lot more damage than what you do most of the time and is more accurate
Get Magic Initiate: Wizard to get Find Familiar. Pick something that flies (Giant Owl or Pteranodon are solid choices) Suggested cantrips are Mage Hand and whatever else. Take 3 levels of Nature Cleric for easy Spike Growth.
Pick a spider as your Companion.
Use high animal handling to make friends with lots of wolves. Hide your spider on a wolf, occasionally move it onto an enemy using mage hand.
Shoot using your bow and arrow from above with advantage. Have your wolves attack using pack tactics. The spider won't be noticed easily.
Your familiar can't attack, but it isn't meant to. You might not even attack from on top. Your animals will.

Go for giant frog and the Goblin hides treasure in the frog's mouth. When the frog jumps, you hear muffled coins clinking.
You can find my published homebrew Spells here.
Giant Weasel.
name him Paulie.
You found him stranded along the Shore somewhere.
Watch me on twitch
Go for a Peacock. They have a Fly speed of 50, but walk at 10.
Yes they are weak (0 CR, only 5 hp). But who is going to kill a peacock?
And when they see a Goblin riding a flying Peacock, they will either stop drinking or start drinking, whichever is appropriate.
