I have yet to really dig into a kobold character, and some investigating into their features helped me to arrive at the conclusion that kobolds make great Monks, as well as Rogues.
I ultimately settled on a kobold rogue, suiting their sneaky nature, and so now I am pondering what subclass works well with them.
Arcane Trickster seems as nice as always, and some spells mitigate certain instances where Sunlight Sensitivity might hinder a kobolds attacks, what with saving throws.
However, the Thief Rogue subclass strikes me as equally useful, and the kobold obsession with hoarding trinkets or other magical artifacts suits both "Fast Hands" they get early and "Use Magic Item" they get later.
Swashbuckler paints an amusing image of a dashing, boisterous kobold...but the features where the kobold must be one-on-one with an opponent seems to eliminate the kobold's "Pack Tactics".
I was curious if anyone had any suggestions for a rogue subclass with a kobold character, and what quirks could make for an interesting character.
I'm playing a kobold rogue who will be a scout at level 3; his name is "Dybdob" and he is a "Kob Scout" (like a cub scout), obsessed with getting merit badges. e.g.:
Quest giver: "I need you to travel to the Sepulcher of Sorrow to kill the werewolf wight."
Other party members: "Great, we will get some good loot and free the land from a horrible evil!"
Dybdob: "Great, I can get both my Undead Slaying AND Lycanthrope Hunting badges!
He's going to be mostly ranged attacking, so the skirmish ability will be useful. And his thieves' tools will be flavored as a "saurus army knife" (Swiss army knife).
I had thought of doing arcane trickster but have already played one, so wanted to do something different. If you go the route of arcane trickster, pick up the find familiar spell and get an owl familiar... it can fly in and serve as an ally for your sneak attack + pack tactics and then fly away without provoking attacks of opportunity. Also if you have the minor illusion you can make an illusion of a bush or rock or other item to hide behind (other races can do that too, but if you're only 3 feet tall it's a lot easier...)

I would not go with scout or swashbuckler. If you get a mount, then you will always have advantage on attacks. and seeing as your a small race you can maneuver no matter where you with a dog mount. but because you would be using the mounts movement it hurts the scouts and swashbucklers ability's. Thief would be awesome, and maybe even a mastermind that way you can focus on rapiers and always give out advantage to your ally's.
i recently started only my 3rd D&D campaign, and since the DM allowed us to go a little different than the first 2 with our types of characters, i decided to play a Kobold Rogue. I did look at the subclasses, but quickly established that for roleplay purposes only, i wanted him to be a thief. We are starting a campaign in Baldur's gate and my Kobold is damn proud of his Flaming fist badge because it allows him even more freedom to take whatever he wants. (and not get in TOO much trouble)
We are level 3 at the moment and i love the character. Often times, he'll just wander around while the party is talking to people.. and look at what he can take. The other day, as the party was getting arrested, he just dashed out of the window and ran away. Roleplay can be fun with Kobolds.. laying traps, and basically being small and ignored by most. (inferiority complex maybe?)
The minus in strenght is only limiting for carrying capacity in my case. That's why i have other party members who can carry my stuff. :D
The pack tactics has been huge so far. While our dwarf paladin is always in melee, my Kobold can sneak attack with the ranged attack and do a lot of damage. I like the fact that i can use my bonus action to just put myself out of harm's way after my attack.
Level 13 and level 17 are nice for the Thief. Using any magical device.. nice. And then 2 turns in the first round of a combat? awesome. That's if we ever make it to level 17.
Not sure when I'll play it, but my intention is to play a Kobold Arcane Trickster at some point; aside from mainstays like Green Flame Blade and/or Booming Blade as cantrips most of the spell choices will be for comic effect, though by happy coincidence they should all still be useful.
My current spell list has Charm Person (for the ultimate puppy-dog eyes), Color Spray because it not only gives advantage but is the perfect spell thematically for a Kobold that doesn't fully understand their own powers and just panics and a bunch of colours come out, and lastly Grease because it's grease.
I expect it'll be a lot of fun, and I'm hoping to whip them out for a party where at least one member has Powerful Build, so my Kobold can use them as a mount and/or suddenly leap out of their jacket.
They'll be 100% glass cannon with low Constitution and a Kobold's default Strength penalty, they also probably won't have high Intelligence in early levels as I don't think it fits my theme (stole a spellbook and barely understands the magic they can cast), but that leaves room for some Wisdom (for perception) and Charisma (for attempting to sneak past guards while disguised as a child with a false moustache).
So yeah, a comedic character, but a thematically appropriate comedic character hopefully (i.e- they're not funny because they're trying to be, they're just a bit naive, brazen and immoral… plus magic).

I love this idea so so much.
It helps that the Scout subclass works so well with a kobold.
The nickname is a happy accident. : )
If he was a goblin he'd be a Gob Scout.
