I saw a debate online where someone had claimed that familiars counted as allies, so for engagement rules having a pet rat engaged would allow the player to get the relivant advantages. In opposition to this it was pointed out that familiars cannot attack (unless you have something like Pact of the Chain), so would present no threat to the enemy, but then the RAW didn't say that is a requirement.
If a familiar does count as an ally, then would a rogue with a rat in his pocket get sneak attack? Would a kobold get pack tactics? If your familiar runs out of engagement, would the enemy get an attack of oppurtunity? If so, would an enemy with polearm master be able to choose to strike your rat when you stepped towards him?
As hard as it is to picture, supposedly Familiars can do the Help action. I know not how.
The Rogue with the rat would need the critter out of pocket and within 5 feet of the enemy. I think the Kobold would. If the Familiar runs away, it should be viable for Attacks of Opportunity. Nobody gets to do an Attack of Opportunity on a target moving itself towards them so far as I know.
Yes to all of your questions. A tiny creature can take the Help action; most people stick to the owl since it's the best option, and you can think of it as flapping its wings in the enemy's face.
If the rat is in your pocket all the way, it and the enemy have total cover from eachother. And really, I would just recommend treating it as an item rather than a creature. In an situation where a creature could be considered aiding you in battle, it can also be attacked, so...

familars are allies yes (NO blurry lines here ally means anything willing to help you)
Familiars are creatures, and friendly/allied to you.
If your familiar is within 5 feet of a rogue's target, that qualifies for sneak attack. Your familiar is also able to use the help action, and give advantage on your attack roll, also qualifying the rogue for sneak attack.
I would probably also treat the familiar as an item if you put it into your pocket, but if you were using the rules for mounted combat, the familiar can be the 'rider' with the rogue serving as an 'independent mount'. The mount/rider combination does also qualify as having an ally within 5 feet of your target, thus enabling sneak attack.
