He has plate armor because he got a natural 20 on a roll trying to haggle the price down from a smithy, and the other players also put in some money towards it. 18
he took the defense fighting style. +1
ioun stone of protection at the end of a pretty tough dungeon. +1
homebrew item, tower shield. +4 (this also grants a -4 debuff to all dex rolls)
so that totals to 18+1+1+4= 24
and with an additional animated shield that would have been 26.
Ah, nice! That's a fun bit of luck with the haggling and great that the party pitched in. :)
A word of caution about letting AC get too high though - the 5th edition game is built around normal boundaries for levels, so you may already be finding that many monsters have a hard time hitting the paladin.
Yeah, I've been increasing the DC of all encounters rather dramatically because of it. it's becoming quite a fun game of "hit the paladin" but of course his healing abilities just top it all off.

So, one of my players, 4th level Paladin, has a animated shield.
my question is, would he be able to use a second regular shield on top of that, as he has both hands free, and how many actions would it take up?
I think here the general rule of shields applies all the same, which says you can benefit from only one shield at a time.
The item in question states as part of it's text:
"You can benefit from only one shield at a time."

Thanks! I didn't see that! It doesn't mention it in my DMG. It only shows the magic item description.
or right. Thanks for the help. well, now I know that he can't have an AC of 26!!! yet...
A quick question - how has the character got such high AC for a 4th level character?
At 4th level, I would expect them to not be in normal plate armour yet. :)
If they are in Plate with an Animated Shield and Defense fighting style, that totals AC 21 and there aren't many bonuses available ontop of that.
