Are all echoes of a Greatwyrm the same? Or can the vary in small ways like sex, powers, or alignment?
I am curious, because I am working on creating a Greatwrym as the protaganist of my Campaign, but wanted to have the Party's benefactor be one of the echoes but good in alignment.
Also can someone kind of give me a run down on Dragonsight and "how" it is? Does the dragon just "know" that they have echoes out there? Do they just "know" what the echoes know? Does one awakening their Dragonsight become aware of one echo and as their Dragonsight grows as they become aware of more and more?
I am just trying to get a solid handle on understanding this so I can pass that same understanding through the Game.
I think you have a good idea, having an echo be their benefactor while the real one being against them.
As such, I would rule that this particular echo has a magic item or something that protects it from it's original. Maybe something like an amulet of non-detection. This should exist even if the standard rules say the original knows nothing, as the echo should be wary of being scryied upon
Thanks! I really and stoked on this idea and I cannot wait to get it all written up so I can start the Game!
Would you suggest that both echo's be of the same in powers? Just one being Good and the other being Evil? And are all echoes the same Age? This is a big thing for me. I really would like some of them to be younger.

There's actually a table for this in the book! The short answer is no, not all of the echoes of a dragon are the same. They can vary between their sex, age, alignment, and other parts of their identity across worlds.

Do you mean antagonist? Because protagonist means the good guy. "Protagonist" typically means the main character, while "Antagonist" would mean the BBEG (Big Bad Evil Guy).

Not exactly clear, as far as I can tell, so it's up to you as the DM. It's described in the beginning of the book as a "passive awareness" of their echoes, but can expand to allow them to communicate with them. It's not clear how they communicate (though I imagine that Gem Greatwyrms would do so telepathically), but it's clear that Dragonsight isn't a solid, unified concept and is a bit open-ended for different DMs to use in different ways.

If you want to run it as that, it works like that. Yes, it can grow as they become more adept at using their Dragonsight, the book is quite clear in this, but whether or not they just see one of their echoes at first is not clear. It's up to you.
I hope this helps!

Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
One possibility might be that your patron dragon and BBEG dragon developed their dragon sight at the same time and first detected each other. Then realized that eventually they were gioing to have to fight each other ala the Highlander stories (there can be only one) and the patron is using the party to help beef him up and locate other versions that can be defeated or incorporated to make the patron stronger than the bbeg in the final battle. Should let you do lots of world hopping 😁. Might even develop a magic item that lets the party capture the draconic soul to bring back to the patron something like the Ghostbusters holding tank.
Holy heck that sounds cool! There is a reason I need all the echos around alive. The goal of the Great Wrym is to have the largest interdimensional Treasure Hoard in existence. I haven't figured out why that one echo opposes the whole but there is one. Not sure which material plane the two main will be from. Thinking Eberron and Krynn. Spelljamming between the two might be fun.

Simplifying the differences table that was already linked:
1,4,5: Physically different to some extent, mentally basically the same person in different circumstances (4 specifically is just maturity).
2: Mentally different to a negligible degree, and physically identical.
3,6,7: These are not the same dragon at all and have a good to guaranteed chance of actively opposing each other.
8: Massively physically different and roll again; I assume you ignore 8s if they happen again.
An adult or ancient dragon can gain dragon sight becoming aware of one or more of their “echos” on other worlds. They don’t become a greatwyrm until they merge with at least 1 of those echos.

A Greatwyrm is the result of the combining multiple echoes of a dragon.
