I have a idea for a character, but it requires them to be a celestial Warlock, but they are CE and a murderer. I know succubi used to be angels of some kind, and that they are now fiends, but could it be possible? What about that person on the cover of descendant into averness? I heard they used to be an angel?
To clarify, i want to be a CE warlock who pretends to be a cleric, but to have healing spells I need the celestial pact, but what celestial would give power to a evil person, which is why I needed to find something like a celestial, or even a former celestial, but evil, hence my question.
Most of you are saying they were never angels?? I swear i saw a video made by a prominent dnd YouTuber about them that said they were. Weird.
Succubi were never angels. That said I see nothing wrong with a background of:
Succubi searches for a rumored dark alter to swear her allegiance to.
She finds it and offers her soul up.
SURPRISE you are now a Celestial Warlock!
WHAT. How dare you try to save me. I do the corrupting here!
There is no alignment restriction for Warlocks worshiping The Fiend, why should there be for Celestial? Evil tries to corrupt, Good tries to save. Go for it.
Think of it as a Priest following around a Thief trying to save him.
I think you're missing the question... it isn't a question on if a Succubus PC could be a Celestial Warlock, but if a Succubus could be the Patron for a Celestial Warlock.
I'd say that, by default, no. But D&D is a really versatile game. If you want to have a Succubus patron for a Celestial Warlock, you just have to come up with a reason why. Maybe you could just ignore the flavor of the Celestial Warlock, and reskin it to just focus on the mechanics of the subclass and create your own story for it. Maybe the succubus is simply able to "fake" the effects of a Celestial Warlock to trick their warlock into thinking they're a celestial. Maybe the Succubus has found a means to connect to Celestial energy which she herself can't use, but she can channel it into a Warlock to use it for her. That said... you can also just say that, in your setting, Succubi are fallen angels who still have access to celestial energy. The story is yours to tell.

Based on this logic, some stray cat could be a Celestial patron, despite being a normal stray cat and nothing more....
Paladins can just devote themselves to an ideal like revenge and suddenly develop magical smitey powers out of nowhere, so getting powers from a mundane cat isn't too far of a stetch for D&D.

Succubi and Incubi have never been angels or celestial, ever. Not in D&D and not in real world mythology, either. In D&D they've always been fiends, sometimes demons and sometimes devils and currently neither - but always fiends.
The person on the cover of Avernus is Zariel. She was a celestial who became a Devil. She is nothing like a succubus beyond some generic fiendish features of appearance.

They were until they weren't. No they can no linger be considered celestial, because they became a fiend by defying the divine. According to lore these fiends can attempt to redeem them selves with 100 good deeds for every 1 bad deed as a succubus/incubus. However unlikely as their need to dominate and sow pain and corruption is too hard to deny themselves of the pleasure of doing so, they would never find enlightenment. But if one did, their wings would become blackened feathers and their horns would remain as a permanent stain for their corruption. No halo, no glow, no alabaster skin. Their skin forever reddish. A constant reminder they will never achieve their full former glory
@Cybermind watch a youtube video about what they dont tell you about succubi. This youtuber take a compendium of knowledge from 1st edition up to 5th edition. They were pleasure angels who defied their patrons and were cast into the nine hells forever turned into succubi and incubi.

Yeah I used to watch that channel. Until I realised a lot of the stuff they came up with was just fabricated not real D&D lore.

Does it need to be a succubus? Evil celestials exist. Evil Empyreans are mentioned in the Monster Manual, and a handful of the other high-powered celestials on the Monster list are also evil.
One can safely assume there exists sufficient supply of fallen angelic creatures or celestial servants of questionable gods to serve as patron to an evil celestial warlock.

There's absolutely no chance OP is still seeking an answer to this nearly 2 years later.
And its not just from dnd its book such as greyhawk and the world of krynn and forgotten realms everything that made dnd what it is today. Each of these worlds we're in dnd and these worlds originated from novels written by T.S.R. before wizards of the coast bought them out and i can say for certainty that this lore is correct.

If you do want a fiend that could be confused with a celestial, try Erinyes.

Do you have evidence that this lore is debunked? Im along for real because i want to see the evidence you suggest this is not correct.

And if you want to get technical. All dnd lore is fabricated.
It could be a succubi passing itself for a celestial being. IIRC in EBERRON isn't the Silvery Flame religion impersonated by a demon afterall? 😉
