Situation: You're on 2nd watch with another party member, the DM asks you to roll a D12 (random encounter chance), he then asks you to roll a Perception.
You fail the perception roll, you will not be hit by a surprise round.
The other person on watch with you fails the perception, they are considered surprised, the party members who are sleeping may be considered surprised.
At the beginning of the combat round, when initiative is rolled you add your +5 bonus from the feat, your dex mod, and the d20 roll.
The creature, due to the perception roll, manages to get within combat range of you because of stealth/invisibility, it will not gain advantage on the attack due to the feat.
This does not apply to traps as they are not capable of surprising you and they do not (generally) have an initiative. Traps are triggered/found based on the passive and/or active perception/investigation.
Feat - Alert
Always on the lookout for danger, you gain the following benefits:
-You can’t be surprised while you are conscious.
-You gain a +5 bonus to initiative.
-Other creatures don’t gain advantage on attack rolls against you as a result of being unseen by you.
____
Does the first part apply to creatures only? or does it also apply to things like traps?
