So we had a session where the question of is drawing a weapon a free action. I had always had it DMed at me drawing and stowing weapons takes an action, but the PHB says under actions that can be done in combat:

Use an Object

You normally interact with an object while doing something else, such as when you draw a sword as part of an attack. When an object requires your action for its use, you take the Use an Object action. This action is also useful when you want to interact with more than one object on your turn.

Normally I would be fine to hand wave this but the party hexblade likes to use a shield and also cast hex (he is too low level to have war caster yet) and I need to know if it is an action to don or doff the shield to cast the spell or not.

I found the answer someone linked me to some Jerremy Crawford twitter posts.

Doffing/donning shield takes an action IIRC, but drawing a weapon is free.
