Let's say I used Heat Metal to get an enemy to drop their sword. Could my Wildfire Spirit then swoop down to either pick up the sword or teleport away while carrying it? I'm not looking to WIELD it, mind you, just get it away from an opponent.
The wildfire spirit is a small elemental with STR 10.
You can use your bonus action to order it to take an action other than dodge. A creature can combine picking up an item from the ground with another action. Teleporting is the action you want the spirit to take.
So, in the end, it is your DMs choice, but generally, I would say, it is possible to burn your bonus action and order your wildfire spirit to take the weapon and teleport away.
As for wether the Wildfire Spirit can pick-up item dropped into other creature's space, being a small creature it should have a reach of 5 feet and may be able to.
I recall a similar Q&A regarding Disarming Strike and a Dev confirmed he would allow a fighter to do so;
@keybuk With Disarming Attack, can fighter Attack (Action), Disarm (Maneuvre) and then pick up the weapon (Free Interaction) ?
@JeremyECrawford The rules don't stop a fighter from using Disarming Attack and picking up the dropped item. A DM might say the item is out of reach.
@JeremyECrawford I would allow the fighter to pick up the item if it was close by and the fighter had a hand free.
TBH I don't even really need my spirit to 'pick up' the weapon. Just hold it. If it could do so and fly upwards out of reach of my foe that's nice but even if it just sits on it and then teleports it 15 feet away to force the foe to have to rush over to get it (and take fire damage picking it up mind you) that would be a massive edge.

Picking-up a dropped item is one thing a you can do in tandem with your movement, assuming it's within reach.

While worn/carried items are intended to teleport with you, wether sitting on one count as such would be up to DM.
