If you have access to ethereal travel (for example using Etherealness) could you theoretically just find the chest there and open it?
If so, where on the Ethereal Plane does the chest appear? I would assume it is in the same place it was on the Material Plane before casting.
Also, the spell says that if the effect ends while the chest is on the Ethereal Plane it is "irretrievably lost", not destroyed or moved, so with ethereal travel you could just find it again?
The fact that you can always call the chest to you and that it can be irretrievably lost suggests the chest is in a random location within the Deep Ethereal, not the Border Ethereal (the part that overlaps the Material Plane.) If the spell simply moved the chest to its corresponding position in the Border Ethereal it'd be trivial to find (just check the last place you dismissed it), and someone with See Invisibility or Truesight could accidentally stumble upon it.
Yes, but it's also a really powerful spell. It's a reliable way to get extradimensional inventory space, and if you need to hide something invaluable it's hard to do any better than this spell. Even if someone steals the miniature from you, they can't use it to summon the chest (unlike other options like the Bag of Holding.) It costs 0 gold to renew the spell.
Not that I know of. Scrying targets a creature or a location you've seen before on the same plane of existence. Neither of those would let you spy on the chest while it's hidden, and even if it did the Deep Ethereal is just a misty empty space with no landmarks. Even if you could scry it and you had a way into the Ethereal Plane you'd still be no closer to finding it.
I'm not aware of any spell short of a Wish that'd let you find an item in the middle of literal nowhere.
Theoretically? Potentially? Maybe? Yes, it could work. But it's like trying to find the contents of a broken bag of holding, it's nigh impossible. It can happen, and usually when you're searching for an item required to progress through the campaign (Artifacts for example).
Not sure why they used the Ethereal at all. It is a travelled plane. Bags of Holding have their own dedicated pocket dimensions.
Notably, the bag of holding and similar never say they create a pocket dimension or demiplane, etc. They say the inside space is more than the outside dimensions. And I believe in other editions it has been specifically categorized differently to magic that creates/connects space on a different plane.
So secret chest uses the deep ethereal because it is a fundamentally different classification of magic. A bag of holding cannot disappear inside itself, a secret chest is not bigger on the inside.
Anyway, to answer the OP, I also believe it is in the deep ethereal and can not be found without the spell.

The space inside a Bag of Holding and similar is considered an extradimensional space though (first sentence, last paragraph).
Regarding why they used the Ethereal Plane, it might be a holdover from way back when demiplanes were primarily located in the Ethereal Plane.
Nowhere does it state that you cannot move the chest while its on the material plane.
My question is: Would I be able to Summon my chest, & have a party member move it to block a door?
I say a party member, because I can't be bothered to do manual labor after all. /shudder :D
Yeah, I don't see why not. I mean, once you summon it, it's just a chest.

So a couple of questions about Leomund's Secret Chest:
If you have access to ethereal travel (for example using Etherealness) could you theoretically just find the chest there and open it?
If so, where on the Ethereal Plane does the chest appear? I would assume it is in the same place it was on the Material Plane before casting.

Let me know your thoughts!
