So, looking at the AMAZING new Oblex monsters (thinking how to implement the already <3) I noticed this bit at the end of the Sulfurous Impersonation ability.
"The slimy tether is immune to damage, but it is severed if there is no opening at least 1 inch wide between the oblex’s main body and the simulacrum. The simulacrum disappears if the tether is severed."
Seems pretty self-explanatory I suppose, but it leaves me wondering about ways Players can sever the tendril. I mean, if you drop a large rock on it it will just reform around the rock by RAW it would seem. That's putting it a little more extreme however, since my first though was slamming a sword into it while it's on the ground. Would that sever it? It's immune to damage after all. Or would it reform around the sword before the simulacrum disappears.?
Since the wording of how to break the tendril refers only to openings or a clear path from the body, I don't think a sword or even big rock would ever cut it. It's more about collapsing the whole tunnel, or shutting the door. In the open you'd be very unlikely to cut any tendrils without some sort of magical impenetrable sphere around the main body.
But really, in combat the copies don't actually do much beyond extending the oblex's reach a bit. Their true danger is outside of combat. I imagine a scene where you reach a quiet dungeon corner and settle in to rest. An NPC who went off scouting earlier arrives back and offers to take first watch. One of you smells a hint of sulfur and the NPC smiles mischievously. Before you have a chance to grab your weapons the Simulacrum unleashes a torrent of psychic power. You are all stunned, but your quick-thinking rogue leaps forward and slams the door closed on the barely visible tendril. The NPC dissolves into sulphurous dust and you all have a few moments rest and recovery before the oblex itself arrives from the other passageway...
Most doors have some opening usually, but some tomb doors come to mind.
I think the easiest (and possibly intended) way is through a relevant wall spell that prevents physical passage, such as Wall of Force.
I wonder if other effect-blocking things, like Otiluke's Resilient Sphere, would work. If the simulacrum can be targeted as a creature, it shoud. Given the simulacrum is intended to resemble a creature in most ways, I think it would be a valid target.
