Dear DM's who DM for me, please ignore this post and go on your merry way.
How big is the opening of a bag of holding?
How much damage would 500lbs worth of 10lb, or 25lb, or 50lb rocks do falling from various heights?
It is easiest to view a bag of holding as a bag. Generally a coin purse or some other type of object.
There are various methods to determining how much damage rocks would do. This sounds like it should use the table in the dmg. Its either going to be Falling Rubble in a collapsing tunnel which is 4d10 damage. Or Crushed by compacting walls for 10d10 damage. If I was the DM i would probably go with 4d10 damage.
The size of a Bag of Holding's opening is not specified and would be up to DM, as well as any damage it could cause. Improvised Damage could be a suggestion.
Do you really want the game to turn into a cartoon where dropping heavy things on people is the most effective strategy? Personally, I don’t. So I always go with the falling rules, you do a d6 for every 10’ it drops. If it’s a rock, if you summon a blue whale, still a d6 per 10 feet.
The damage is entirely up to the DM. Some use the height at which objects are dropped from, some use trap/improvised damage rules, some make up their own. I would use ~3d10-4d10 damage for 50 lbs of rock, maybe 2d8 for 20 lbs, and 2d6 for 10 lbs. Enemies would get a Dex save (DC 15) for 1/2 damage. Though at if dropped from very high up (>60ft) I'd make the PC roll Intelligence + Perception to position themselves correctly above their intended target.
