So I had a chance to acquire an Alchemy Jug in one of the campaigns I'm playing in. And informed the DM of my intention to use it to create Acid to be used in conjunction with the Catapult spell.
The DM says that doing so will require 2 days to create 1 vial of acid according to RAW. Looking at the item I see that it creates 8 ounces of acid. The DM thinks the ounces part of the description refers to weight not volume. I see it as volume because everything else in the Alchemy Jug's item description uses a volume measurement (Quart, Gallon). Also most items interacting with liquids uses volume rather than weight like the Decanter of Endless Water.
It's absolutely volume, the item is consistent within itself. However!
From Vial:
A Vial holds up to 4 ounces.
If the Alchemy Jug is telling you it's 8 ounces by weight, clearly you get 2 vials of acid from one day because the vial is using the same term for measurement.
Water-based liquids (including acids) generally have a weight very close to one ounce per fluid ounce, so the difference is not likely to matter. However, give that acid has a weight of 1 lb, it's probably not actually held in a vial and the DM is saying that you need 1 lb (16 ounces) of acid to create an acid vial.
