Does the shadow stealth ability on the shadow creature (among others) allow them to hide in plain sight or does it just let them hide as a bonus action instead of an action?
I'm inclined to think the latter personally, while it makes sense for the basic shadow creature, but less sense for some of the more physical creatures with the trait.
Shadows can’t hide in plain sight, they need to follow the same hiding rules as everything else. But they can hide as a bonus action, which is incredibly powerful in dim light!
RAW the wording doesn't allow them to hide in plain sight, but I allow it anyways just because a jet black creature in a poorly lit area would be very difficult to consistently keep track of.
Yeah, that technically wouldn't allow the shadow to hide if in plain sight, IMO.
However, a shadow in dim light or darkness seems like it would be incredibly hard to see. If it's in darkness I'd probably rule that it's not in plain sight no matter what (and can always hide). In dim light it really wouldn't take much for it to find a spot to hide - if there's even a few real shadows in the room, it's not hard for the Shadow to blend in with one of them.

To change it from a simple shadow to reduce confusion about the ability, would you consider a boneclaw in the open in darkness hiding from creatures with darkvision to be able to hide? from creatures with devil's sight?

If a Warlock has the Devil's Sight pact invocation, can they see a shadow even if it tries to hide in dim light or darkness?
Yes, you can't hide from a creature that can see you clearly.
