So, this is a more silly question, but I wanted to see if there was an official ruling on it, what would the cost be for a barrel of mead? I ask because, as a silly moment in the campaign I'm running, I want to feature a dragon ally they recently freed drinking with them at a tavern. As she is a young bronze dragon, she is a large creature, and I figured barrels of mead (or any other drink) would make the most sense for her, and I wanted to know how much it would cost, so that I can keep proper track of the party's tab.
Just taking a stab here, I'm going to suggest it should be about 10 gp.
The Player's Handbook gives the price of a mug of ale as 4 cp. Assuming a mug is about 16 ounces, and there are about 4000 ounces in a barrel, that gives you 250 mugs per barrel. Multiply that by 4 cp and you've got 1000 cp, or 10 gp.
Should mead cost more than ale? Honestly, I have no idea, I don't drink either of those things, but you can use that as a starting point. If mead costs 30% more than ale, then call it 13 gp, etc.
Aurora's Whole Realms Catalog was an AD&D 2e supplement for the Forgotten Realms. It lists prices for a lot of items (tools, clothes, shoes, musical instruments, exotic fabrics, accessories, scribes' utensils, furniture, food, drink...)
Maybe it helps with your idea. For example, for Wines and Ales:

In general mead should cost more than ale in places where honey is harder to come by than barely/grains. So if we are looking at something similar to our real world, mead would cost more.
However, if you are in a region with Giant Bees that produce rivers of honey, mead might be fairly cheap.
A note for the Aurora's whole realms(greatest supplement of all time) a barrel is 30 gallons so roughly 2 standard full size kegs. In real world barrel size depends on location and booze type, but mead if it was more popular in the Us would likely be 31 gallons as I see it as closer to beer than whiskey which would be a 53 gallon barrel In auroras whole realms you can also get mead in a butt(100 gallons) for 48GP and some wines/beers in a tun(250 gallons,) usually 2x cost of the butt size. And then something like evermead is so rare it is only sold in the bottle for 30gp or handkeg(2 gallons) for 50 gp so if you were to scale it up, mead that was peak quality would be 750gp for a barrel. obviously outside of forgotten realms you'd want to retheme it from evermead to something that fit your setting. This was from 2e the era when elf equaled best at everything. So evermead was the best by far.
I'd say that's almost certainly a keg, not a barrel. So ... basically I'd argue both 2 and 10 gold is right. It's just the size of the container.

Blanket disclaimer: I only ever state opinion. But I can sound terribly dogmatic - so if you feel I'm trying to tell you what to think, I'm really not, I swear. I'm telling you what I think, that's all.

Per the source in TarodNet's post. A barrel is indeed 2 GP and a cask (12 gallons) was 8 SP and "hand keg" (2 gallons) was 14 CP. At the source, a Barrel holds 30 gallons while the 5e barrels hold 40 gallons.

Maybe it helps with your idea. For example, for Wines and Ales:
- Elminster's Choice (a popular beer exported from Immersea in Cormyr): Barrel 2 gp
- Purple Hills Cider: Barrel 5 gp
- Mead: Barrel 20 gp
Well, I was within an order of magnitude at least...

Well, you see, the difference can be pretty notable depending on the product. I'll go with something between 10 and 20 gp.
