Not really a... rule question. But I imagine the implication of the spell is that the sword is a flat plane shaped like a sword formed of Force energy, much like a Wall of Force is a flat plane shaped like a wall made out of Force energy. That said, they took that flavor text out of the 2024 rules, so now it's just a spectral sword.
I kind of imagine it like the darksaber from the clone wars cartoon and the mandilorian. I guess not always, since I knew of the spell before clone wars existed. But once I saw the show, it was like, yup , that’s it.
Mordenkainen's Sword is stated to be a sword shaped plane of force. What does that mean? What is a plane of force?
This is 2014 rules. In 2024e, the sword is spectral.
A plane means that is a flat surface. Think of it like the thinnest possible sheet of paper (although more rigid than steel) and shaped into a sword shape (any sword you like). Occasionally, rules will have special interactions with force effects, but it is rare.

Not really; lightsabers would be radiant damage since they're blades formed from contained plasma. Yes, that includes the Darksaber- it's still a lightsaber.

I was talking about the aesthetic of it. In my own headcanon. Which is allowed to deviate from official Star Wars canon, at least, it is when I’m playing D&D.
Clearly, if I wanted something closer to a lightsaber, it would be a sun blade.

How to add Tooltips.
My houserulings.

I always thought Mordenkainen's Sword to be a arcane force sword.
It's a sword made of a sheet of magical force. Think sharp Wall of Force.
