I find myself on many 5E threads talking about things that are not "fan favorites" yet being a fan of them myself. Some opinions of folks seem to be because of actual game play, good and/or bad experiences. Some opinions seem to be from theoretical or presumed use of something upon reading it, the word "objectively" is thrown around a lot by these people, and things (abilities, spells, and the like) that "feel bad" are disliked. Damage output, especially repeatable, single-target, non-situational damage, seems to be a fan favorite. Character builds, theory crafting, and these kind of things seem to be a hobby within a hobby where DM fiat or interpretation are considered "bad" or "undesirable". With that thought in mind, is illusion magic kind of just ignored by these pockets of people or discussions? Illusion magic has always been fun and effective at the games I've been a player or DM in. I'm wondering what all of you thoughts and/or experiences are or have been.
Illusion magic is highly dependent DM rulings, which makes it hard to discuss online in any context other than telling stories about what happened at your table.

Basically this.
The kinds of discussions you are talking about are very dependent on concrete RAW. If it has any room for DM interpretation or rulings, then it can't be accurately compared within that discussion.
