So how does this spell work? Is the astral version of yourself only existent in the astral plane? So if you move to another plane, like the Material Plane or the Fire Plane, then your body moves along the tread to your astral body and then you materialize at that location on the Material or Fire plane? So if you're just an elf, you'd die upon manifesting on the Fire plane. Can you use your equipment and spells? Can you only talk to people but not physically and/or magically interact with the plane you are on? If you can cast spells, can you rest while in this form to regain your spells and spell slots? Can you rest to heal yourself in this form? If your physical form is poisoned/cursed/diseased, does the suspension suspend the affects of those conditions? So as long as the spell is cast, you're basically immortal to the passing of time? Can people physically interact with you, like shaking your hand, or are you basically incorporeal ghost form? Can you pass through objects like doors and walls at will? Can you physically interact with the environment?
9th Level - Necromancy
Casting Time: 1 hour
Range/Area:10ft.
Components: V, S, M(for each of the spell’s targets, one jacinth worth 1,000+ GP and one silver bar worth 100+ GP, all of which the spell consumes)
Duration: Until dispelled
Source:Player’s Handbook, pg. 243
You and up to eight willing creatures within range project your astral bodies into the Astral Plane (the spell ends instantly if you are already on that plane). Each target’s body is left behind in a state of suspended animation; it has the Unconscious condition, doesn’t need food or air, and doesn’t age.
A target’s astral form resembles its body in almost every way, replicating its game statistics and possessions. The principal difference is the addition of a silvery cord that trails from between the shoulder blades of the astral form. The cord fades from view after 1 foot. If the cord is cut—which happens only when an effect states that it does so—the target’s body and astral form both die.
A target’s astral form can travel through the Astral Plane. The moment an astral form leaves that plane, the target’s body and possessions travel along the silver cord, causing the target to re-enter its body on the new plane.
Any damage or other effects that apply to an astral form have no effect on the target’s body and vice versa. If a target’s body or astral form drops to 0 Hit Points, the spell ends for that target. The spell ends for all the targets if you take a Magic action to dismiss it.
When the spell ends for a target who isn’t dead, the target reappears in its body and exits the state of suspended animation.
The way I have always seen this spell work at the table is that when the spell ends, your body is instantaneously transported magically along the silver cord, and so long as neither your body or astral self are at 0 hit points, your regain your body where you exited the Astral Plane. If you body goes through hazards while following the cord, it could potentially take damage, but it would not be subjected to combat during it's travels because the movement is so fast.
So as an example, at the beginning of a day you cast Astral Projection and end up on the Astral Plane with your party. You travel for 45 minutes without encountering any hazards along the way, but get into a combat encounter just before leaving the Astral Plane, and take some damage. After the combat, you leave the Astral Plane and regain your body, returning to full hit points (since your body took no damage even if your astral self did).
I hope this helps. I would be interested in hearing if anyone else runs this spell differently.
