Would a sentient magic item show up on detect thoughts radar? Says anything with an intelligence over 3 and speaks a language shows up. It definitely fits both of those, or will it not matter because its magic, or its a dm decides situation?
While I agree with you for the most part, filcat, I would err on the side of DM call and the sentient item's history/origin. If it is simply an item imbued with a ginormous amount of magic to create a sentience, then no, that spell wouldn't work. If the sentience of the item comes from a "soul" inhabiting it, then it may be possible. However, it's a tricky thing since, as the name implies, the sentient item is not a living creature.

The spell description says "the thoughts of creatures." I guess sentient items do not qualify as creatures.
