Hey guys, me and my friends are playing the Out of the Ab campaing and oue DM allowed me to get a Cube of Force, thing is that im a little of a creative rules lawyer.
My char is a lvl 3 hexablade pact of the chain warlok with lvl 10 way of the shadow monk. Since we are mostly on dark or dim light areas i use the shadow step to tp arround with my cube with the barrier activated to protect my party from harm. Thing is, the item doesnt explain how magic actualy works with the barrier. Spell effects from attacks is understandable that cant go through such as eldrich blast, witch bolt, scorching ray, etc, but what happens with spells that are casted on a point you can see, such as fire ball, misty step, darkness, etc. Can this spells been casted from one side of the barrier to the other? My char can tp cause he uses shadow step, that is a trait and not the effect of a spell.
I dont know if spells casted on a point travels from the caster to the point, in wich case the spell shouldnt work because of the barrier not allowing any magic to enter the cube, or the effect just happens on the point regardless of the barrier.
A typical spell requires you to pick one or more targets to be affected by the spell's magic. A spell's description tells you whether the spell targets creatures, objects, or a point of origin for an area of effect (described below).
And it also says.
A Clear Path to the Target
To target something, you must have a clear path to it, so it can't be behind total cover. If you place an area of effect at a point that you can't see and an obstruction, such as a wall, is between you and that point, the point of origin comes into being on the near side of that obstruction.
If spell effects cannot pass through the barrier then it's an obstruction like total cover - so you cannot target beyond the barrier. So, no fireballs because you have to target a point outside the barrier which is blocked from you.
Be aware, enemies with spells like Misty Step can still bypass, since technically the target is "Self". Their effect isn't passing through a barrier, they just disappear from the plane of existence to re-enter it where they choose. Like Nightcrawler.

The same effect can happen if the user of the cube teleports. An ongoing spell effect at location x will not cease if the cube user teleports to location x...the spell effect didn’t pass through the barrier, the barrier appeared around it.
also, the fourth face prohibits spell effects, not magical effects. Non-spell magical effects can still pass through the barrier if the 4th face is pressed.
