I know if you push something, that is not amphibious, through a portal to the realm of water it will drown. I'm wondering what happens if a creature or being is halfway through a portal and it closes. Let's say a PC is following someone and they open a portal and step through. When the PC sees this does not step through right away, but pokes their head through to see what's on the other side so that they know what to expect and then it closes on them. Are they forced through? Are they forced out? Are they beheaded with their head in a different location?
There are no general rules for portals. Consult the rules for the spell, magic item, class feature, monster ability, etc that created the portal or the adventure book that features it. If it doesn't say what happens if the portal closes, assume it's something non-damaging and non-lethal. If the portal was intended to be used in damaging ways its rules would say so.

They’re forced out of the Portland, rolling randomly to see which side they end up on

Ok cool, while it would be cool to kill characters and monsters like that, it would be overpowered. Thanks
