So, I'm new to 5E, but have been playing since 79" when we just had the BASIC set.
Question is this....
If My Level 1 Rogue has and 18 in DEX, thus +4 ability bonus. And his level grants him +2 proficiency bonus. He has proficiency in Thieves Tools. Would his total bonus be +6 on the DC check for a lock? I'm confused on if you get both of these as bonus or just one?
Same question as above, but now add the Expertise feat (in thieves tools). If his proficiency bonus is doubled (per the feat), does that count for DEX, the Level Bonus or both?
Thus, would his check be +8 (Dex x2 bonus),=+8 total
+4 (LVL bonus (+2x2)), =+4 total
or is it double for both making it +8 (dex x2) and +4 (Lvl x2) = +12 total?
OR is it +4 (double level bonus) +4 DEX bonus for a total of +8total?
In general: with rolls involving abilities (attacks, ability checks (which include so-called "skill" checks), saving throws) always add the relevant ability bonus, and you add your proficiency bonus if you're proficient with the relevant activity (proficient with the weapon with which you're attacking, proficient with the skill associated to the ability check you're rolling, proficient with the saving throw you're rolling). Expertise doubles your proficiency bonus with that skill/tool (meaning you get to add it twice, in addition to whichever ability bonus applies, when rolling).

You get both if you are proficient. So for your Rouge.
If not proficient: +Modifier
If proficient: +Mod +Proficiency (for you +6)
With expertise: +Mod +2xProficiency (for you +8)
Yes, ability (tool) checks use ability mod and tool proficiency if any. Expertise only doubles proficiency bonus.
So +6 for proficient and +8 for expertise in your example.
Note that other skill modifiers (like sleight of hand) do not combine with it.
Thanks all!
