Wondering how a couple of things work for a multiclassed character. Read the PHB section on it but still feeling a bit confuzzled.
Say I have a Level 2 human wizard who wishes to multiclass as a cleric. Assume his ability scores are high enough. When he gains XP for third level, he can then become a 2/1 Wizard/Cleric, yes?
Assuming he alternates level gains, how does he advance beyond 11/9, or 10/10? Isn't he effectively 20th level at that point and "stuck"? If not, how would he advance levels?
Also, how would spellcasting for this character work? Again, I've read the PHB section but for some reason it's not cohering for me.
yes, the maximum level for a character is 20th level, regardless of how that is broken down by multiclassing.
A 20th level character could be multiclassed as 5 Fighter, 5 Rogue, 5 Barbarian, 5 Ranger - they would probably be less powerful than a 20th level Fighter single class, so multiclassing should be selected with care. :)
The cap for the character level is still 20, so the character can't advance beyond an 11/9 or 10/10.
For the spell prepared, you go taking the classes singularly. So, if you have (as an example) a wizard 10/cleric 9, you prepare spells as you'd have a wizard 10 and a cleric 9 separately.
For the spells slots, you take the progression in Multiclass Spellcaster with the level entry determined by the following rule:
You determine your available spell slots by adding together all your levels in the bard, cleric, druid, sorcerer, and wizard classes, half your levels (rounded down) in the paladin and ranger classes, and a third of your fighter or rogue levels (rounded down) if you have the Eldritch Knight or the Arcane Trickster feature. Use this total to determine your spell slots by consulting the Multiclass Spellcaster table.
A revision to multiclassing—round up when determining spell slots
It is not immediately clear whether this will be a change to Multiclassing Rules, or if this will be exclusive to Artificer. The article itself only mentions this change in the final entry on p.14 for Artificer levels--it is an Artificer article after all--yet changing the MC spell slot rounding cardinality for only a single class would be a ridiculous mistake.

Help?

Thanks, all. Appreciate the clarity.
A recent article in the Unearthed Arcana may have made a big change to this rule. I'd suggest looking it up.
Which Unearthed Arcana article are you referring to?
This year has been two articles on the Artificer. Prior to that, 2018 was:

I believe they are referring to The Artificer Returns:
