I'm still rather new to D&D & this would be my 1st time having to use this forum. I heard that it's possible to mix races other than humans: instead of your typical half elf half human (I prefer to call them helf or helves 😁 teehee) or half orc half human (horcs 🤪), you can mix a halfling with a gnome, or a goliath with a tiefling IDK. For a while, I've been wanting to create a Half Sea Elf Triton just for fun, but I find homebrewing it here on Beyond difficult. How do I go about mixing & creating traits such as the ability score increase, age, size, alignment, etc. for half sea elf half triton character?
Simplest way I've done it is to create two tables listing the race specific qualities and have the player choose which quality they get from either heritage. In the case of similar racial qualities, they retain them.
They'd get: Con +1, amphibious, 30ft swim speed, and the ability to communicate with small aquatic creatures. All of those because they're shared between the two races.
They'd choose between (Dex +2) or (Str +1, Cha +1)
They'd choose between Fey Ancestry or Guardian of the Depths.
They'd choose between Control Air and Water or Trance and Keen Senses.
Keen Senses You have proficiency in the Perception skill.
Trance Elves don’t need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day. (The Common word for such meditation is “trance.”) While meditating, you can dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive through years of practice. After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep.
Darkvision Accustomed to dark depths of the oceans and seas, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Child of the Sea You have a swimming speed of 30 feet, and you can breathe air and water.
Friend/Emissary of the Sea Using gestures and sounds, you can communicate simple ideas with Small or smaller beasts that have an inborn swimming speed or that can breathe water. They can understand the meaning of your words, though you have no special ability to understand them in return.
Guardian of the Depths Adapted to even the most extreme ocean depths, you have resistance to cold damage, and you ignore any of the drawbacks caused by a deep, underwater environment.
Keen Senses You have proficiency in the Perception skill.

I think older edditions had guidelines for that, but I didnt play them, so not sure.
I suggest you Google "d&d race mixing" because there are a lot of people with ideas on this.
Simplest way I've done it is to create two tables listing the race specific qualities and have the player choose which quality they get from either heritage. In the case of similar racial qualities, they retain them.

They'd choose between Control Air and Water or Trance and Keen Senses.
Finally, they'd keep Darkvision.
(Dex +2)
Guardian of the Depths
Trance and Keen Senses
So, if your DM allows it:
Half-Elf (Sea Elf/Triton)
Ability Score Increase: Dex +2, Con +1
Keen Senses You have proficiency in the Perception skill.
Trance Elves don’t need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day.
