Hey! I can't find anything in the distance regarding hexblade's curse after it's been cast. I know the target has to be in 30 feet initially, but 1) what happens if the target runs away? 2) Does the curse last? 3) And what happens if you curse someone, run away for 30 seconds, and them start shooting at them with a long bow?
Also, 4) can u do it from the Ethereal plane?
Here's the text of the ability:
"Starting at 1st level, you gain the ability to place a baleful curse on someone. As a bonus action, choose one creature you can see within 30 feet of you. The target is cursed for 1 minute. The curse ends early if the target dies, you die, or you are incapacitated. Until the curse ends, you gain the following benefits:
You gain a bonus to damage rolls against the cursed target. The bonus equals your proficiency bonus.
Any attack roll you make against the cursed target is a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20 on the d20.
If the cursed target dies, you regain hit points equal to your warlock level + your Charisma modifier (minimum of 1 hit point).
You can’t use this feature again until you finish a short or long rest."
It lasts for 1 minute, period. So they can run around the corner, teleport to the Astral Plane, whatever, they will still be cursed for the duration stated in the description.
Of course you can't actually gain any of the benefits unless you also have attacks that can target the creature. But I suppose if it plane-hopped and somehow immediately died on another plane, you'd still get the hit points.
1) If the target runs away they are still cursed for 1 minute. They can run as far as they like, the 30' limit only applies to initial placement of the curse
2) The curse lasts 1 minute as stated. No matter where the target goes or what they do, they are cursed for 1 minute.
3) You still have 30 seconds to shoot them with the long bow before the curse ends. Of course, you have wasted 5 rounds running away so the combat is probably already over anyway or the target as moved behind cover so you can't shoot them - but if you could the curse still lasts a minute from when it is placed.
4) You can use the curse if your target is within 30' of you.The ethereal plane is NOT within 30'.
Creatures on the ethereal plane are still on a DIFFERENT plane from the prime material plane even if they happen to be able to see what is going on. This means that a location on the Ethereal plane is not within 30' of ANY point on a different plane since there is no way to get there without magic or a portal or similar. Just being able to see doesn't get rid of the range limitation. So, no, you can't use hexblade's curse on a target on the prime material plane when you are on the ethereal plane or vice versa since you are not within 30'.
