Hey everybody! i've got 2 questions about the feat and how it works. First of all i play with a ranger equipped with one handed crossbow in the main hand and nothing on the off hand.
First question: with my attack bonus granted by the feat can i add my dex modifier? My dm say that i can't cause the attack bonus is the same of 2 wield rule (i repeat, i use only one crossbow and a free hand)
Second question: The second rule of the feat say that i dont have the disadvantage on the attack rolls BUT It didn't say anything on the rule about the damage of a ranged weapon in melee combat (phb 149 on improvised weapon) so that's mean i should throw only one die to hit but use 1d4 instead a 1d6? and if i should use 1d4 can i add dex modifier and other potential damage bonus like colossus slayer, hunter's mark, and/or various spell?
1: You apply you DEX mod to the bonus action attack. It is similar to two weapon fighting in that you make an attack with a BA, but it is not granted by TWF, so it does not follow the reduction that only applies to TWF. Or to put it simply: the feat that grants the attack doesn't say you dont add damage mods, so add damage mods.
2: I think you are confusing the purpose of this feature. You can make ranged attacks (fire the crossbow) without disadvantage. You dont need to use improvised weapon rules at all.

I know that's not an improvised weapon but under this section is stated " if a character uses a ranged weapon to make a melee attack (or throw a melee weapon...) it also deals 1d4 damage."
My dm want me to use a 1d4 so i wanna know if his interpretation is right.
Thx. Now i fully understand the purpouse of the rule. It doesn't mean shoot with the crossbow but just actually hit the target in melee with a ranged weapon itself, like using a mace or a stick. And that's why is stated under the improvised weapon

If you hit someone with the crossbow itself you do 1d4+str damage, if you use the crossbow to fire a bolt while in melee it does normal damage.
