I have a level 4 goliath fighter whos 8 ft tall and can carry 480 lbs or push, drag, or lift 960 lbs, my question is do i need any kind of proficency to toss my party members who are all less than 300 pounds up onto a roof of 20 ft or less?
I can carry 60lbs but I don't think I could toss a 40lb weight 20 ft up in the air so it would be quite legitimate to put a strength check on it.
The goliath also needs to ensure he tosses them just the right amount, if he doesn't throw them high enough they fail to get onto the roof but if he throws them too high they could suffer fall damage on landing I can think of a number of ways of dealing with this.
Do a strength check with a band of acceptable values, less than 8 and they fail to reach the roof, more than 20 and they get thrown so high they have to make a dex save to avoid 1d6 of damage.
Using just the right amount of effort is more like a dex check
All the players being tossed need to make a dex save to land on the roof without taking damage.
I wouldn't do more than one check per toss but you could have a bit of variety, the cleric is heavy armor is going to require all your strength to get him onto the roof roll a strength check, but while it is easy to throw the halfling that high roll dex to make sure you accidentally throw him 40ft in the air.
There are no strict rules for this, so it is up to DM.
I would set it as a fairly high athletics check (~DC17). Or use a function to determine DC (I like math) like [character weight] ÷ [5% of your carry capacity] + [distance in feet] ÷ 5.

Do whatever makes sense to you.

I would say just ask the dm if that's okay.
Thanks for the advice
