Checks with artisans tools are poorly defined by the rules, but your DM might ask for a CHA (brewer's supplies) check when socializing while serving a drink (like to get them drunk enough to tell you a secret) or an INT (Alchemist's supplies) check to identify a substance. You add a d4 to these rolls.

Xanathar's Guide adds multiple example uses for each tool. Won't copy them here for obvious copyright reasons.
This is true. Here is a link. I stand by my complaint. These are optional and barely a start. These should have been in the core rules and even more examples should be here instead. I stand by my earlier statement.
"When you make an Arcana check or an ability check involving artisan’s tools, you can roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the ability check."
Can someone give me several examples of when this would be used? Thanks!

Artisans' tools aside, Arcana checks are usually quite common.
