So I have thought about this and wanted to know if the game mechanics would allow this in a RAW format or if this is something more specific to a homebrew situation. In the section on Wizards that devote themselves to the school of transmutation, the trait Minor alchemy allows the wizard to change the physical properties of a a non magical item temporaily. So my question is this, is it possible to change another character's iron or heavy armor into mithril or adamantine for the 10 minute duration of the trait or would that be something that's not allowed?
Mithril and Adamantine are both listed on the Magic Items table/section of the DMG. In addition, Minor Alchemy lists both the materials which can be affected as well as what it can be turned into.

Mithral and adamantine are non-magical metals. Mithral Armor and Adamantine Armor are specific magic items that happen to use those materials. Not every armor made out of adamantine is a magic item.

Yup, this is the real reason it can't be done. Neither metal is in the list of materials Minor Transmutation lets you manipulate.

DM has final say, but RAW would be no.
