I looked in the forums and I couldn’t find any threads on cover. Maybe I’m just blind, but I Ed a bit a better explanation of cover.
I understand how full, 3/4 and half cover works. But what if the ranger wants to pop out from total cover (behind a corner or something) take a quick shot, then pop back behind the wall? How is that adjucated? Do I simply give him 3/4 cover for being open for only a second or two?
Ranger is behind a pillar, they have 3/4 cover. Pops out, attacks, and takes position behind the pillar, they have 3/4 cover.
Ranger is behind a wall, they have full cover. Pops out, attacks, and takes position behind the wall, they have full cover.
14th level Ranger is hiding behind a thin bit of bush, they are hidden (assuming passive, or active, perception fail) and have 3/4 cover. Pops out, attacks, takes position behind the bush, they have 3/4 cover. They then use Vanish to Hide as a Bonus Action, they are hidden (assuming passive, or active, perception fail) and have 3/4 cover.
The state of cover is where the ranger ends their turn and where the attacking creature is in relation to their position.
Not to mention just using movement on the turn. Move one space (5 feet) from cover, Attack for the action, then move back behind cover. The DM might impose a penalty or a check for not KNOWING where the target is until the moment you pop out to take your shot, but it is most certainly doable.

Yes, you can do that. The DM determines how much cover they get when you do it. Most of the time I personally reduce cover by 1 level (Full-> 3/4, 3/4 -> 1/2, 1/2-> none)
You are basically buying a cover reduction by taking the Ready action.

Assuming I understand the rules properly here:
Ranger is behind a pillar, they have 3/4 cover. Pops out, attacks, and takes position behind the pillar, they have 3/4 cover.
Ranger is behind a wall, they have full cover. Pops out, attacks, and takes position behind the wall, they have full cover.

I realize this is old but just to add something, enemies can hold their attack "until player x steps out from behind the wall".
