Dumb question, but when I read 'DC 10 Wisdom (perception)' or anything along those lines, why does it specify the Wisdom part of it? Wouldn't it be easier to just say perception? Thanks in advance for your input :)

Please, for the love of the gods, tell me how am I to balance DnD with the family and my son's travel hockey? HALP!
It says "Wisdom (Perception)" check because in the rules it's also perfectly possible to ask someone to perform an "Intelligence (Perception)" check or any other ability score. Probably the most common is "Strength (Intimidation)" as opposed to Charisma Intimidation.
The "Wisdom" bit says to use your Wisdom modifier and the "(Perception)" bit says to use your proficiency bonus if you're proficient in Perception. If you just asked for a Perception check - technically you're asking them not to add any ability score.
That said - if you ask for a Perception check - most players will know to just look at their character sheet and tell you the value DNDBeyond tells them for the Wisdom (Perception) check and all will be fine.
What Emmber said. It's also a reminder to the reader that the roll is an ability check; new players sometimes assume rolls that involve a skill or tool fall into a separate category.

Yeah, I was going to say this.
It isn't a "perception check" but rather a "wisdom check which you add proficiency in perception to." Obviously that is too long for how often ability checks are called for.

AHHHH! That makes so much more sense! Thank you! I knew it had to be something fairly simple :)
