tough to say...its probably different for any given character, their class, what they are wearing and wielding, magic items, etc...
As a very, very, very general rule though, there is a table in Xanathar's for quick matchups (I assume this is for medium difficulty), but "equal" matchups would equate a CR around 1/2 to 1/3rd the character level (so a level 10 character is roughly equal to a level 4-5 CR creature at medium difficulty)
Yeah it varies very widely based on class, subclass, etc. It was never meant to be something that converts consistently.
For most accurate answer use the DMG's monster building guidelines to calculate CR.
Generally, you can estimate them to be around 1/2~1/4th their level (but I've calculated some builds at 3/4 and others at 1/6, so wide margin for error).
I have a question: What is the Challenge Rating of a character made using conventional character creation?
