As it said I am making an eldritch themed sorcerer with a backstory of being a lone survivor of a eldritch breeding farm that escaped but not unscathed and has been struggling with his genetics for most of his life. He wears a large hooded cloak to hide his deformities such as tentacles, hardened carapace, and the changed to the left side of his face along with his 3 fingered mind flayer hand/arm.
Subclass: Abarrent Mind Race: Semic Hybrid (flavored as an elf that has been either fighting the transformation or something went wrong with the transformation) Background: I am thinking Haunted One for the flavor
Now my issue is figuring out spells what cantrips and spells do you think would be good because I want it to fit theme wise but also I love utility and out of combat stuff, any advice?
I think I'd look to Transmutation spells given you character concept, Arms of Hadar (flavoured as actual tentacles whipping out of you) Expeditious Retreat & Feather Fall at level 1, Alter Self & See Invisibility at level 2 & Polymorph at level 4 for some mild shape shifting shenanigans,
Absorb Elements and Shield are useful defensive level 1 spells.
Cantrip wise, depends if you want go heavy utility or damage, Chill Touch & Shocking Grasp would be my go to damage cantrips and then have and two from Dancing Lights, mending, minor illusion, light and prestidigitation. I include Dancing LIghts & Light as there are times when Darkvision can be a hindernace as it is only black/white/shades of grey. An alternative to Shocking Grasp would be Primal Savagery from Xanathars Guide to Everything and there are lots of alternatives to Chill TOuch...I just like the side effects fo each Chill Touch and Shocking Grasp.
That should take you upt o level 7, probably not worth planning to much further than that.
EDIT/PS: If you are going down a researcher/trying to reverse what happened to you route I;d also be tempted to take Ritual Caster: Wizard as a feat at level 4 so you cna then get hold of those lovely ritual spells.
