Hello! As my username implies, I'm really new to DnD (I haven't actually played the game yet) and I need some help with my first character's backstory. She's a Lightfoot Halfling Ranger, her alignment is Chaotic Good, and she has a Folk Hero background. I really want to make a good backstory for her, but I have no idea where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Well, I used the suggested personality traits, but I rolled a dice so they were random. She is very protective of those who cannot protect themselves, and believes that everyone should be treated with dignity and respect. She also wants to free people from oppressive tyrants, but is a bit of a hypocrite in that aspect, as deep down she thinks things would be better if she herself was a tyrant ruling over others. Finally, she has a deep shameful secret (I haven't figured out what yet) that only those who knew her when she was young are aware of. As such, she can never go home again.
Those are the random traits I got, obviously I'd like to flesh her out a bit more :).
It might seem counterintuitive, but I find characters with very simple, vague backstories are almost always the best, because then you have room to improvise and enjoy the game as it comes rather than filtering everything through a story none of the other players care about. So don’t worry too much about it!
That said, maybe she helped rally her people against a tyrant, like an orc slaver or Sherriff-of-Nottingham ruler? And maybe she originally sided with the tyrant (hence the shameful secret), and, after changing sides, left in shame?

Hmm. Do you have any outline at all? Personality? Relationships?
