When you create a character, create a sidekick. Some classes come with these for free, but make sure you develop a rich backstory for them. Warlocks get patrons. Wizards can get familiars. Clerics get gods. Anyone can get a secondary character with a sentient items. There are also pets and squires.
If most DMs are like me, they love creating characters, and they love participating in their players' character-creation process even more. A sidekick character is an NPC, controlled by the DM, but with a special relationship with your character that you help create. It's the perfect way for the DM to bond with a player and a character.
I second that comment, but in a more general manner: put NPCs and places into your backstory that the DM has the opportunity to work in. Free plot hooks and NPC interaction! What more could a DM dream of! This makes the campaign more custom to the party. And every DM wants to be like Felix from Dingo Doodles.
Also, while it is totally fine to get up to some shenanigans, don't do anything just to ruin a DM's campaign. It really does hurt their feelings. There isn't even an exception for really mean DMs -- just leave their campaigns.
