I'm writing up some rules for werebears and I made this blurb for the opening, aiming to achieve the same short story goal that the races have before their race rules - please have a read and let me know what you think!
The bandits had delighted in spreading fire behind them. They did not know better, but they would learn soon enough.
The first scarcely made a sound as I snatched him away to die. The second had time to turn, her eyes going wide before I sent her screaming into the flames she had so keenly set burning.
The third saw me properly, terror dropping the weapons from his numb fingers as he slowly backed away through the smoke. “I didn’t know!” he said, voice coarse from the smoke in the air, quiet from the terror gripping him. His leather armour hissed as he pressed his back into one of smouldering pines. “I didn’t know!”
I stepped forward, to him nothing but a great shadow in the smoke, and the wind saw fit to grant him one last glimpse of what he had brought upon himself. His jaw went slack, his fingers clawing unheedingly on the burning embers of the tree at his back. “You could have prevented this”, I say. It’s the last thing he ever hears.
What do you think? I'm aiming for a guardian of the forest kind of deal, but also sinister/scary. You know, like a were-bear!

Sounds good, although I get a certain 'smokey the bear' vibe from it so it loses some of the scariness.
