So, I need help fleshing this out a bit. Here's the scenario:
Our party returns to their home village after another successful adventure only to discover that their patron (an old bard named Thom) has been thrown in jail for stealing from the matriarch of the village, Lydia Karstensen. Thom swears he didn't steal anything, and in truth, he didn't. Lydia planted some of her property on him in his jacket (something valuable... a gold and pearl mirror, or something else) and sicked the Sherrif on him.
What's going on is that Thom has informed the matriarch that he's going away for a time on a dangerous quest. She, though she'd deny it to her last breath, is in love with him. Throwing him in jail is her way of protecting him.
So... how do I make this interesting for the players? This isn't supposed to be a huge adventuring encounter, more of a world-building interaction, fleshing out the NPCs in the world around the players.
Thoughts?

"If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence, try orderin' somebody else's dog around."
It sounds weird but make her an antagonist. Use some NPCs to build in this idea that Thom is a good person and doesn’t deserve any of this.
If the party asks about this with the guards, it gets a BAD reaction from them. “Lady Karstensen‘s orders! Stand DOWN!”
If your players bite at the carrot, you can plant clues in her home of her true intent, and then it will slowly become this sweet, quirky love story. <3
