So I'm thinking of playing an Arcane Trickster Changeling, and we're starting at level 1 in the new Dragonlance module.
They're personality is gonna be a little light hearted, playful, trickster, but I don't have any good ideas for their backstory. Also, the only thing I know about the campaign is that we're all going to Ispin Greenshield's funeral with this letter that says he's a great mutual friend. Not knowing anything more about the setting makes it hard to come up with something too. So I'm open to some ideas!
One combo I love with the changeling race is the feylost background. This is more a theoretical character idea, as I have not been able to play it myself, but I like the idea of a young human commoner getting lost in the Feywild and the magic of that place transforming them into a Small changeling. They were human but they have forgotten their original form and are now fey. In addition, when they return from the Feywild, the difference in the flow of time means they have been missing from their village for a long time, perhaps only an elderly sibling recalls they had a younger sibling who just disappeared one day while playing in the nearby forest.
If you wanted to work in the brief, Ispin Greenshield could be someone who took pity on this changeling child surviving on the streets or the outskirts of their former village and took them in. With their immediate needs met, maybe the changeling was able to hone their shapechanger ability to live a more normal life, or maybe the feywild visitors that come to the changeling in their dreams teach them arcane secrets or urge them to explore the world.
Anyway, just a suggestion. If you can, check it out.
Oh! And the fey mark you get from that background can be really fun for changelings if it is something that exists even when you are in a different form, like sweet scent, because it gives something for other PCs to recognize your character by.
