Firbolgs are a relatively new "phenomenon" to FR. They were not a Race in 3.0-3.5 for instance. If they existed in 4E, I do not know, because well I was playing WoW at the time and just bailed on that edition (which seems to have been a good choice from what I hear). In 5E, Firbolgs are going to be either living in small family groups INSIDE of other settlements, like say a family in Neverwinter. Or they will be living in a small isolated (read to small for anyone to care to place on a map) in the hills or forests.
Halflings are commonly found everywhere Humans are, but a large population can be found in the country of Amn.
Goliaths small groups high in the mountains. No cities. Deal with Giants, Dwarves, and the occassional sunbathing Dragon though.
Firbolgs are in the very first Forgotten Realms book, Darkwalker on Moonshae.
This. Firbolgs go all the way back to 1e. they've just never been popular enough for there to be much lore on, and this is the first time they've /really/ been a player race.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

I enjoy playing Volo's races and I like having a robust backstory with a sense of what the character has heard about his world and his people in it.
I'm currently playing a firbolg cleric who has spent his life exclusively in the far north, but he's now called to Chult.
Is there a resource from which I could pick up where firbolg communities exist (as a general example)?
When I look up cities, I can find that they are mostly human or dwarf or elf or some mix, but I haven't been able to find "the firbolg world".
I've had somewhat similar difficulties find a grounding for halfling and goliath characters.
Firbolgs typically live in temperate Hills or Forests, in colonies (Probably not significant colonies, given the lack of lore regarding them).
Halflings and Goliaths are both nomadic races, though Goliaths are typically in mountainous terrain.

Firbolgs are originally from the Feywild.
