Hi, been having some good fun with my D&D game in the earlier levels, a lot of morally neutral PCs, no murderhobos though, so that's good. Anyway, the party want something different, to suit these rather mercenary characters, and I think sending them on some elemental jaunts should be a new experience. We don't often fight elementals anyway.
As mentioned, these are individuals of a mercenary bent, and clearly financial motivations. So, what monetary motivations can I impart, considering they have no real patrons yet. I'm thinking in terms of retrieving resources for some wizarding guild, but I'm coming up empty.
As yet, none of them have anything for travelling the fire or water planes, and the earth plane seems a bit... Too similar to caves.
So, does anyone have ideas for useful wizardy gubbins from the plane of air? Plants and non-animal bits are the things I'm struggling with most. I would really appreciate some help, thanks.
read about djinni (genies) in the monster manual. Maybe someone wants one caught and placed in a bottle to sell or give as a gift (or some other reason)...or just located, or rewarded for some past service.
...or someone is hiding there and you have to go get them for some reason
The first word ever uttered? A Genie's fart? The fang of a cloud dragon? A pinion feather of the progenitor of birds? St. Elmo's sail? A perfectly clear crystal? The 5th wind? A lost balloon? While not all of these "examples" are, something ephemeral feels appropriate.
I think you have a good idea brewing. If I were to desire to make trips to an elemental plane, it would be for the same purpose. I want to retrieve something that would bring me much gold for sale when I returned.
What do they do on the elemental plane of air that we might take for granted? Fly!! Is there something there that facilitates all the beings flying about? Or, could you take a mundane thing and expose it to the elements of air and give it flying properties, such as a carpet of flying? My first desire would be to capture the essence of flying and bring it back for sale.
My second thought would be to capture the wind and bring it back. You can fill a bottle with air and stuff a cork in it, but that isn't likely to capture the wind. You would need to find the source of the wind and see if you could bring some small pieces back with you, and hope they worked.
Then there is the possibility that you could make something mundane in the presence of a stiff wind that would give it a spectacular look. Imagine pouring molten glass out in a stiff breeze and think how it might swirl about as it cooled creating spectacular sculptures. What about forging a weapon in an air rich environment? Would that make it lighter without making it proportionally weaker?
Those are a few of my thoughts off the top of my head. Good luck.

that's one of my favorite commercials of all time.
These are all good ideas, certainly got me thinking thank you! I've been thinking on some of this stuff for a few hours now and am really liking some of the possibilities popping into my head just from reading these ideas. I feel like all I need now are a few suitably dramatic names for places and products and I'll have some good things to send my merry band of goblin-genocidists out to look for. If anyone has any more ideas or maybe some cool names, feel free to mention them!
Running from MusicScout's (fantastic) suggestions: sending the party to gather aether-wool for the carpets, or maybe to produce it, not sure yet. Or gathering up some sky-essence for some gnome inventors wacky gizmos. Or simply send them to some mighty wind vortex to collect materials for magic weapons. Maybe some cool name for a storm? Reaching the origin of every Northern wind in the multiverse to forge a Frostbrand could be cool (pun intended) or catching lightning bolts for some magic javelins?
Perhaps the party accidentally stumbles into some sort of teleportation circle or room that transports them to a corresponding version that is in this other plane. However once there they find that the teleportation method was one way. They now need to find another way to get home and further adventures ensue.

Ranger: Beastmaster
a key item of the campaign is there or a powerful magic item
they are teleported there and must find their way out to get back to the material plane
they must rescue someone who is on that plane
they need to seek the help of the god or king of that plane
