Hi I was wondering if anyone could give me insight or ideas onto the motives behind the house of Dimir. It seems they want to control everything by deception and knowing peoples' weakness, but is there an endgoal? What would they do if they had all the power?
My knowledge of Magic the Gathering is kind of limited to the Ravnica Guide, so I could be dead wrong, but I’m not sure Dimir has an “Endgoal”. They seem a lo like Mass Effect’s Shadow Broker, striving to maintain the Status Quo by discovering and trading secrets while enriching themselves. They don’t want to affect some great change, but want to ensure when change occurs the stay ahead.
alternatively maybe they were left ambiguous as a fill in the blank. Do they seek some powerful but lost or undiscovered knowledge? Ar they trying to subvert the other guilds from within to control everything? A lot of potential fun for them to be a ambiguous ally/enemy.
In my stream game the players just had a conversation with a member of House Dimir and here is what he said:
"House Dimir, or my faction of it at the very least, is dedicated to maintaining the balance of the guilds. My guild was once responsible for destroying that balance and so now we work to preserve it. It is in pursuit of this goal that we monitor the other guilds, tracking plans, operations, and expansion, and when it appears that one guild may become more powerful than the others we act."
Of course, he is a single member of a single faction within House Dimir, there are other factions with other interests.

I doubt it. I think the magic of the Guildpact that binds the guilds to their roles would prevent any one guild from taking direct control, even if it is through subterfuge and intrigue. They can be influential with the other guilds but otherwise have to stick to their roles. Granted now that the Guildpact resides in a planeswalker, every time he leaves Ravnica the magic that holds the guilds back from outright war is absent as well. So during those absences Dimir could make a play to take control.
That is a good thing to consider, the guilds have half the population of Ravinica and while it is not an even distribution, any one of the guilds would have enough members to populate a city.

Maybe they are already in control...

I think they more kinda gather power/information/ influence for power/ information/ influence's sake. Their goal is to become powerful.
