Besides Curse of Strahd and the DMG there's not much info on it in D&D 5e.
Mordenkainen's Tomb of Foes and Volo's Guide to Monsters contain monsters with a bit of lore that come from the Shadowfell. This is probably the best info you can get for what it's like, what lives there.
