l am making a homebrew magic item, and one of the things l plan on useing in the recipe to craft it is "the melted scales of a ancient gold dragon" and l stopped to think,"wait, are metallic dragon scales just colored like the metal,or are they made of the metal they are named for?" so l decided to make this to ask the people that know more about this then l do
(lf need be l can just home brew it so that the scales are made of that type of metal, but l want to know if l would need to or not)
I don't believe so, it is really up to you though, you would think so because the type of dragon is called 'metallic' but I would just figure it was called metallic because of its color, not its actual material.
No, the scales of the metallic dragons are not literally made of the material they are named after in canon.

I don't have access to all the sources so I cannot say if there is such a thing like a dragon golem made of metal. That would be an interesting feat of magic to create especially if a dragon's soul is bound into it somehow .

not what l was asking about, but a cool idea that l am gonna use.
I'm gonna say no; gold is a soft, malleable metal that would make terrible armor, so if a gold dragon's scales were literally gold its AC wouldn't be nearly as high as it is.

"We're the perfect combination of expendable and unkillable!"
No. Metallic dragons get their name because the scales as adults take on a colour and reflective lustre similar to the metal. However, it's just scale colouring - when they're younger the scales are less vibrant or even differently coloured as wyrmlings (bronze dragons as wyrmlings have scales with more of a basic yellow colour with a tinge of green, for example).

I mean, apart from anything else, the word "melting" describes a process where something's physical state changes, but not it's chemical properties (ie, an ice cube that can be frozen, melted to water, and refrozen). Unless a liquified gold dragon scale could be solidified and beaten back into a solid gold dragon scale, it hasn't been melted, it's been burned or something.
In any event, gold dragons are immune to fire (whereas gold actually has a fairly low melting point), so I don't think you could get even a burned scale of a gold dragon.
All that said, sure, homebrew it. "A wizard did it."

yeah, the scales would need be melted by phoenix fire as part of the makeing of this homebrew artifact teir magic item. (meant for lv 20s as a/the final quest)
The dragon used to have scales, but they were stolen. Now you have to track the thief (could have been hundreds of years ago), figure out where the scales went, and get them back.
I like the idea that scales of a Gold Dragon cannot be forged by normal or exceptionally hot Fire as Gold dragons are Immune to Fire - magical or not.
I prefer the idea that the scales must be forged in a Cold flame instead.
A forge requires flame, but while a Gold Dragon is Immune to Fire, a Gold Dragon isn't immune to Cold. This is more complicated than finding really, really hot Fire to which, according to RAW, a Gold Dragon is still Immune regardless to the heat of the Fire.
The material from the scales of a Gold Dragon wouldn't have the same properties of actual Gold in my opinion. Since it took something special to make the item - acquisition and paradoxical forging, it should be something extraordinarily special.
