Quick note: This is for a story I want to write, not something I want to use in a game. I just can't think of any other material component that makes sense, so I thought I'd ask for ideas here. =)
Backstory summary:
Avalion, a Drow Wizard, was a member of a surface raid party, but after casting an upcasted Fireball on the priestess (his sadistic older sister who liked to torment him) leading the raid and incinerating her and all but one of the other raid party members, he got stranded on the surface.
Sil, a Drow rogue, he was the one member of the Avaliob's raiding party who didn't die when he casted the Fireball, but lost both his hands to the spell. As a male commoner he grew up knowing that he was "expendable" to Drow society, always fearing his next fight might be his last, he never trusted anyone around him, but now on the surface, without the use of his hands, Sil had to learn to trust the other Drow of this small village. He and the Avalion became soon best friends, and Avalion (unknown to Sil) is trying his best to find/or create a magic item to give Sil his hands back.
The Item: Avalion's Wristlets of Permanent Mage Hand (? name pending x"D) The theory, at least on paper, is that Sil puts on the wristlets, concentrates for some time ("I have hands") and a magical hand appears where his hand stumps are.
Current ideas for Material Components:
Wristlets itself:
out of cotton so they're skin-friendly
strands of Sil's hair, so he a) doesn't have to attune to them and b) no one else can use them
Current ideas for the Spell Material Components:
2 flawless Diamonds worth at least 1,000 gold, one for each wristlet, which the spell consumes
2 Snowflake Obsidians to make the Mage Hand look like Sil's skin
something else? Mage Hand itself is a cantrip with no material component, so my ideas so far were just based on the material components for high level spells like Resurrection
Limitations:
the limits of a normal hand, so Sil would be able to do a handstand, or pull himself up a rope, but he wouldn't be able to throw a huge boulder at people (he's a Rogue, not a Barbarian)
Anti-Magic Fields make the Wristlets useless for as long as they're inside the anti-magic field
not sure what would happen if someone would casts Dispel on the wristlets
That's a neat concept. For the last ingredient(s), you could consider (depending on how dark/light the campaign is):
A set of magical gloves/gauntlets belonging to a famous warrior (e.g. side quest for a crypt run to recover them)
The bones of the hands of a creature/humanoid (the strength (or lack of) of the creature could be conferred with the bones - or their modifier could be applied to the character's strength)
A griffon claw to create the nails
The blessing of a witch who normally tells fortunes by reading hands (palmistry) to imbue life to the hands

Oh I like the idea with the Griffon Claw for the nails :D Maybe the bones of a Saber-Toothed Tiger for the hand part? I looked at the spell Enhance Ability and for Dexterity it says Cat's Grace, which seems fitting for a Rogue.
Tho as I wrote, this isn't for a campaign, this is for a fanfiction I plan to write. But I want to write it like it were a campaign.

Ah sorry for missing that- but that does sounds like a perfect candidate/victim ingredient :-)
