What race or Monster would best exemplify the Maori Warriors? At first I was thinking Bugbears, but then I got this wild idea about Dwarves performing a Haka of sorts. What do you think?

They can be ruled by a bunch of Elder Druids who each represent different animals. Or they are just lycanthropes that shapeshift into their family's animal form.

I think this question is in itself a problem. Are you shoehorning an entire, varied culture, into a limited fantasy "race"? No! Humans all the way. Because that's who they are. Be better than that.

Have you considered a Half-Orc? They are almost as tough as a Maori.
Maybe Goliaths, if you adjust them a little so they're island people instead of mountain people.

Half-Orcs I think work best!
As a Half Maori / Half Aussie I think Dwarfs would white wash the culture and race of the Maori's history (even in a Fantasy setting)
